To answer, we need to consider how things stand at present.

Currently, society is split into two main classes – a minority, the (private or state) capitalists, who own/control the world’s resources, and the majority, wage-workers, who provide all the wealth on which the minority rely.

In capitalism’s short life, productive capacity in all sectors has increased many, many times, to such an extent that everyone on the planet could have enough to meet their material needs, and more besides.

But capitalism has a key feature that prevents this – production only ever takes place if there is the prospect of profit for the capitalists.
