Hi Vin, I have bad days and worse days. I was told it would be a long hard road to recovery and I can definitely say that was an understatement, but I'm starting to contribute here and that can only be a good thing. Thanks for asking.I can see where you are coming from regarding morality and capitalism, not a day goes by when some politician, priest or newscaster sees fit to share their moral views that are so full of holes, you could sail a cruise liner through them. Cameron's recent nonsense about Christian Britain being a classic. However I suspect you know the morality I am getting at, is that which has been mentioned recently on this thread, socialist morality. Such a human orientated morality can only exist within a socialist society of common ownership, free access and true democratic participation.I'm not sure about morality only coming about as property owning society came into existence. Morality simply concerns itself with acceptable behaviour within any given society. So obviously a minority controlled society will invent morality that reinforces its position. I imagine our early ancestors would have had rules of conduct.I agree with you when you asked what position the SPGB has regarding this subject and it is very noticeable that the discussion is being carried out by non party members.

Hi Vin, I see the economic interests of our class as the logical part of the case. Also, could you explain how the case for capitalism is based on "morality"?

Perhaps most of the Christians in Britain are like PM Cameron, when in 2008 he said that ,"his religious faith is a bit like the reception for Magic FM in the Chilterns: it sort of comes and goes"

Did anyone catch the Channel 4 docu' "Secrets of the Vatican", Tuesday gone? Was it interesting? Is it worth an hour of my time?

All of the above and for a simple reason: humans beings are multifaceted animals, not robots. 'Nuff said

I tend to agree on a personal level.Alan has a good point about a lot of the working class thinking their best interests lie in getting a leg up over others. There are a number of very comfortably off workers out there. You're on a hiding to nothing, if you think appealing to working class economic interests will work on that lot.

I bet the Tories are seriously pissed off with the BBC for producing a series like this, with rich celebs and members of the "elite" admitting that poverty is real and is, No Fun. It flies in the face of the, "We're all in this together", bullshit. This stuff should be dynamite. How often do the public get treated to the mindset of the "elite". Like most truths, it will fly straight over the viewers heads.

The following links come from a very funny comedy sketch show in the early 1990's, portraying a caricature of Scottish nationalism.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5cUxawA_6whttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MnD7q7EFt0

I agree Brian. There are so many groups out there, on what would be considered the "left" of politics (some very close to our position) that total agreement on how to achieve a workers global socialist revolution, is impossible. The basic similarities are the key. Lets face it, the WSM is made up of socialists that disagree on many levels and points of view. Some compromise is inevitable to achieve a society of common ownership and true democratic control. In the end it boils down to the nitty gritty of what compromises people are willing to make.

I guess Russel Brand is looking pretty good round about now.

I agree that people banging on about how hard done they are is outrageous. The various suffrage movements, trade unions, everyone wanting improvements. Why can't people be satisfied with what they have. I blame human nature, I do, some people are just plain greedy. Outrageous!

I think what Vin suggests sounds like a good idea. This site is a flagship site for the party and it's probably a lot more visible than the other ones. Possibly a perfect way to show off the SPGB democratic credentials. How about it, is it possible?

So what happened to the party getting to grips with the "old Hat" when it was a new hat?

Nice post Alan. I guess you are trying to prove that Russell Brand's talk of revolution is less than genuine by offering up another entertainers emotional political outburst.Well you sold me. I never saw Al Lewis, do his thing, but I saw Russell Brand getting angry and frustrated with Paxman, and it looked real to me. But I guess it boils down to a personality thing. Russell brand is an ex drug addict, self confessed sex addict and flamboyant comedian. I guess some people just can't help judging others on past history and personal preference.

I found the request to leave from a North East member in the EC minutes, and as promised here it is.I think I might owe an appology for bringing this up. At the time I read into it that she felt isolated from the party, but now on reading it again I'm not so sure as to the reason for her wanting to leave the party. Sorry Matt. Whatever you may think of me, my intention is not to deliberately piss anybody off, or make enemies."i. E-mail from Cde M Gosling (5 January) resigning from the PartyDear Comrade, I am writing to terminate my membership from The SocialistParty. I am in my 60s and haven't received socialist standards for along time. Whilst I will never abandon my socialist beliefs I do notwant to receive correspondence from Clapham High Street if only to savepaper. I apologise I can't supply membership details. I used to attendthe North East branch meetings occasionally but that was a long timeago. My father, John Toomey of Sunderland was very active in the 60s and70s but he passed away in 1986. It was through him that I discoveredsocialism. Good luck for the future.Yours for socialismMargaret GoslingCde Margaret Gosling is a member of the North East branch, which iscurrently not holding branch meetings. Therefore, the branch is unableto process her resignation. Both Cde R Cox and P Shannon suggested writing to Cde M Gosling, askingif she would remain a member if we desisted from sending Partycorrespondence to her. Cde P Shannon also suggested that we offer tosend the Socialist Standard to her.Motion 8– Buick and Whitehead moved the General Secretary prepare aForm F, and consult with Comrade Margaret Gosling . Carried: 8-1-0."
