Thanks for letting me know about this.

If you scroll up to right hand corner to your name (Hi, ZJW) when you are logged in, then a drop down ‘Logout’ option should appear. I hope.

I’m sure copies of that pamphlet are still available (I’ll check when I go to HO next Tuesday) but for some reason it isn’t advertised in the Standard or on the online store.

It wasn’t up in the previous online store, but was available as a webpage, (probably just an oversight at the time although ‘Ecology and Socialism‘ was on the old store but not available as a webpage) , so it wasn’t copied into this one.

It was always available as a webpage, but I recently edited it to make it more accessible adding hyperlinks to the page and a PDF version.

Well it didn’t happen in the abatoir in Glasgow I used to go sneak into as a kid. They stunned them and then slit their throats. But again the problem is one of profit seeking and speeding up of killing lines and then of course accidents can well happen.

Yes it is extremely distressing for the animals and the ones handling them.

This is one dirty work I won’t do in socialism, but even here, if meat eating persists into socialism it will not have the same intensity of present profit driven killing methods and better practice will prevail surely.

A pig slaughterer said the “worst thing” about the work is its “emotional toll”. He explained: “Pigs down on the kill floor have come up and nuzzled me like a puppy. Two minutes later I had to kill them – beat them to death with a pipe.”.

Where is that from? Modern methods do not entail beating to death with a pipe. It is still not a pleasant business but..

So now there are two. Private Frasers, that is. And what’s the betting that the new one is from Scotland too !

    Well spotted Adam.

Yes. Think we are in broad agreement, at least (and in my experience of the SPGB, it’s not often one member says that to another.  )

That is one reason why I stopped going to the pub after meetings.

Not sure about the correct pronunciation – I say dower.

That is an Edinburgh or posh  Glasgow Kelvinside pronunciation.

    I say doo-ur for dour.

We haven’t started to put the WSM site up yet Max. We should change the message so it just shows the WSM site as down.

I can’t remember who filmed this debate at Conway Hall. If it was the Party then there’s a possibility the original camcorder tapes will be at Head Office.

It was done by the positive money people Dave. We are seeing if they have kept a copy that we can use.

THE MUTED MOCKERY OF POPPY (COCK) DAY

The ribbons arrayed the honours displayed
    The medals jingling on parade
    Echo of battles long ago
But they’re picking sides for another go.

The martial air, the vacant stare
    The oft-repeated pointless prayer
“Peace oh’ Lord on earth below”
Yet they’re picking sides for another go.

The clasped hands, the pious stance
The hackneyed phrase “Somewhere in France”
The eyes downcast as bugles blow
Still they’re picking sides for another go.

Symbol of death the cross-shaped wreath
The sword is restless in the sheath
As children pluck where poppies grow
They’re picking sides for another go.

Have not the slain but died in vain?
    The hoardings point, “Prepare again”
The former friend a future foe?
They’re picking sides for another go.

I hear Mars laugh at the cenotaph
Says he, as statesmen blow the gaff
“Let the Unknown Warriors flame still glow”
For they’re picking sides for another go.

A socialist plan the world would span
Then man would live in peace with man
Then wealth to all would freely flow
And want and war we would never know.

    (J. Boyle 1971)
