You’re absolutely spot on of course, PGB, but you’ll have an insurmountable job convincing these blinkered ‘band of brothers’. 🙁 They know nothing about human psychology.

    No?

No, don’t accept the premise. “Praise” doesn’t enter into it. Capitalism, like it or not, and for all its perceived imperfections, is the only extant and viable game currently in town.

    Patently obvious.

“Lizzie must be right that capitalism is the best game into town.”

Didn’t say it was the best game in town, simply the only one – at least for the foreseeable future.

“FWIW the SPGB get a mention in the Morris book. But only to say that they are ‘statist’”

Is this the same Brian Morris who has been a guest speaker at SPGB meetings and even attended its Summer School?
As a Bakuninist anarchist he presumably has a problem with the SPGB’s position of “gaining control of the state machine”.

Energy companies are making a killing – Shell, ÂŁ8.2 billion. BP, ÂŁ7.1 billion. These two energy companies made more than ÂŁ15 billion in combined profit between July and September this year.

In the last 12 months, their profits have doubled – and so have our energy bills. This is what’s fuelling the “cost of living crisis”: we pay, they profit.

It’s a crisis of unchecked profiteering and greed.

“Yet you continue to support this system.”

As a matter of fact I don’t, but millions do and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Thus I remain a pragmatist.

Lenin was being optimistic when he was reported to have said “If socialism can only be realised when the intellectual development of all the people permits it, then we shall not see socialism for at least five hundred years.”

“Well, I guess if you set your expectations low enough anything can seem like a major victory.”

    Yep, ever the pragmatist. 🙂

“I am jumping with joy for that the next time I see my Council Tax bill!”

Well, I certainly am, with each monthly instalment costing me a mere 32 quid!

And that’s on the back of the ÂŁ150 Council Tax Energy Rebate received a couple of weeks ago. Yippee!

“Pretty much for exactly as long as the reformists have been pushing theirs!”

Except that “reformists” have at least had limited successes e.g. abolition of the Poll Tax.

“And then you wonder why all your reformist efforts come to nothing.”

Oh, the irony. Remind me, how long has your little band of ‘brothers’ been pushing your “well-meaning” pipe dream? 🙂

Christ, you people are mind-crushingly tedious. No wonder your Party has such an infinitesimally small membership.

“Wonder if Lizzie45 knows the reformist rallying song, Talking Heads ‘Road to Nowhere’.”

    Yes, of course.

It’s about nothingness, to be sure, but it’s also about trying to make the world a better place, even though the kind of world being suggested is ultimately unattainable.

“I wanted to write a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom”, David Byrne is reported to have said.

Utopia is the destination Byrne is referring to in ‘Road to Nowhere’. “There’s a city in my mind,” “it’s very far away,” etc. He’s describing a future that cannot exist.

And my dad had a pleasant surprise this morning. Postie dropped a letter though his letter box from the DWP notifying him that his 2022 Winter Fuel Payment will be ÂŁ500. This includes extra cash from the government to help with the cost of living.
