As we have always put it, it’s the case not the face, the claim not the name.

Yes, yes, I know all about that, and much more about the WSM. After all, my father had a brief association with the Austrian Bund Demokratischer Sozialisten, which was considered at one time to be a companion party of the WSM, until it turned racist.

However, as most people are not particularly rational or objective, they’re likely to be understandingly wary of any party that has as its candidate someone perceived to have a suspiciously contrived name.

That’s true but I don’t think that refers to the “USA” but rather the “Americas” as a whole – particularly Mexico – and I suspect that is largely related to coverage of the drug cartels.

I didn’t say that it did. If you care to re-read my post you will see that reference is made to the American continent as a whole, and in particular to Mexico, Brazil, Columbia and Honduras.

Let’s hope the SPGB chooses a candidate with a more convincing sounding name than Shannon Phineas Trahern Kennedy who was its representative in one of the local council elections held last year.

Something similar to Mr Blobby might have been a better choice! 🙂

    From the same source:

Reporters sans frontières stressed: “countries where no war is officially taking place are not necessarily safe for reporters and some of them are near the top of the list of those where killings have occurred”.

“In fact, more journalists have been killed in ‘zones at peace’ than in ‘zones at war’ during the past two decades, in most cases because they were investigating organised crime and corruption.”

The Americas accounted for almost half of the journalist murders, with Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Honduras responsible for most of the deaths.

“America is nowadays clearly the world’s most dangerous continent for the media” (emphasis added)

Who will want to employ folk in their late 60’s? Call this an unfair generalisation if you must, but old people are no good at anything.

You really are a breathtakingly stupid ageist moron. But if you really are from Essex one shouldn’t be that surprised, an English friend of mine tells me 🙂

Something else, Lizzie, for you whoopee about. British Gas have just sent me an email to say they have a charity to help people in difficulty because they can’t keep up with paying their energy bills. You might be eligible since you don’t have to be a British Gas customers. Let us know if they agree to throw you a few coppers.

How very kind and considerate of you to provide that link, Adam. (hope you don’t object to being addressed by your given name – so much more friendly and informal than ridiculous pseudonyms).

However, I’m unlikely to be eligible as I’m not ‘in difficulty’, due in part to the numerous handouts I and many thousands of others have already received and continue to receive.

Millions of households are set to receive cost of living payments in the next two months.

The government has announced households receiving means-tested benefits will get these payments in three instalments.

The first payment of £301 will be made in spring, followed by the second payment of £300 in autumn and the final payment of £299 will be given in the spring of 2024 – totalling up to £900.

Households will receive the first payment between 25 April and 17 May.

    Nice system capitalism, isn’t it?

Yup, but it’s the only game in town.

I am not taking it upon myself to chastise others on this forum. I am merely pointing out that the time has perhaps arrived for the moderator himself now to do some chastising in the case of this particular individual whose behaviour is completely unacceptable

    Robin

I realise you consider yourself to be ‘the cat’s whiskers’ – (isn’t that the idiomatic English expression to describe someone ‘full of their own self-importance’?) – but I’m quite sure the moderator doesn’t require your ‘advice’.

I think it is very clear now that TS´s purpose on this forum is simply to troll and abuse others. I would recommend that at the very least his account should be temporarily suspended

    14. Rule enforcement is the responsibility of the moderators, not of the contributors. If you believe a post or private message violates a rule, report it to the moderators. Do not take it upon yourself to chastise others for perceived violations of the rules.

All in, the “abuse” was no worse than any other that’s been tolerated on this thread. You are taking advantage of your position as moderator to censor truthful criticism of yourself…

Absolutely spot on, TS. I’m beginning to think this list should be renamed the alanjjohnstone forum.

It’s about time the SPGB’s Internet Committee appointed a replacement moderator.

Do you really think these are going to make much difference to your way of life and standard of living as an exploited proletarian?

Well, actually no, but they’ve certainly helped me and many thousands of proles in the here and now.

More good news on the cost of living front. My energy bill for the month ending 22 March 2023 would have come to a staggering £307.72 had it not been for government handouts which some of you would rather hand back.

After taking into account the Energy Price Guarantee and the monthly Energy Bills support scheme together with what was left over from the Alternative Fuels Payment of £200 paid last month, my current bill has been reduced to £57.30!

    Whoopee!!
