The introduction in Meiers book favourably concludes with a quote from Lenin's What is to be done? Was Meier a Leninist? Also this http://www.stefan-szczelkun.org.uk/taste/Chapter3-Morris.html says EP Thompson removed stuff from the 1955 edition for the 1977 reprint. I thought it was the case that material was added to the 1955 edition in the 1977 reprint.
jondwhiteParticipantA rare Socialist Party of Canada Manifesto is on ebayhttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/112429186169?ul_noapp=true
jondwhiteParticipantJust got the latest issue of Jacobin in the post and they state in an accompanying appeal leaflet that they are aiming for sustainable 50,000 print circulation by 2020.
Quote:This would be heights unseen for an American socialist publication since the halcyon days of the Appeal to Reason. The focus of the magazine will remain consistent. Jacobin was founded with the understanding that a better world is possible and will come into being by challenging capitalism and those who profit from class society.Could SS declare a print target and how to get there in a similar way?
jondwhiteParticipantSorry to say, but silly cover image (again).
jondwhiteParticipantBBC have launched their election bot. Maybe time for the SPGB http://m.me/bbcpolitics
jondwhiteParticipantWould anyone say 'Something New' Party is left-wing?
jondwhiteParticipantSpare us the homophobia in this topic please.
jondwhiteParticipantSomething New state
Quote:RationalDecisions and policy should be based on sound scientific evidence, and tested so we know if they work. We must make the right long-term decisions, without pandering to tomorrow's headlinesDemocraticOur democracy is far from perfect. We can make it better, and one day give everyone a direct voice in how we decide things as a society.and they have an open-source manifesto
Quote:Something New has adopted the OpenPolitics Manifesto, an independent non-partisan manifesto that absolutely anyone can contribute to. To suggest a change, just click the button at the top right and write in what you think the manifesto should say.jondwhiteParticipantCde Coleman made a similar observation in his contribution to the debate against Albert Meltzerhttp://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/audio/how-can-real-revolution-be-achievedIn any case, the vast majority of workers (a majority of which are women) are in favour of capitalism, redistributing wealth to the rich. Does this make them weak or strong? The Times might be misrepresenting the University, and some of their op-ed writers are hardly tough guys, Michael Gove seems pretty feeble with his aborted leadership campaign and I remember an excoriating review of his book by author William Dalrymple a number of years back. Their 'strong and stable' political leader is running scared of a debate. I seem to recall there was a book review from Saturday's Times I planned to share here for discussion.
jondwhiteParticipantWitty and creative. As good as their one in 2015 or was it 2010. It's outsider reputation is one the SPGB could play on.
jondwhiteParticipantDoes anyone have any more information on the author of this book?
jondwhiteParticipantBob Andrews wrote:With hindsight would you say Islington's support for the future capitalist government of Poland was a smart move?Probably not but was it ever a branch resolution? With hindsight would you say Camden and North West London branches defiance of a democratic decision was a smart move? With hindsight would you say the statement of the Provisional Committee in 1911 that 'We deny altogether that a member of our Party is elected to Parliament for the purpose of taking party in any kind of legislation whether by voting for it or against it' was a smart move?

jondwhiteParticipantHere's a cliphttp://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p052qkp1I see we're on the landing page for the Daily Politics toohttp://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mjxb
jondwhiteParticipantA comment from libcom
Quote:Perhaps should mention that this capitalist member of the SPGB at that time, whilst well meaning in these efforts, caused some justifiable irritation and censor from the SPGB by seeking to subvert their democratic function using the financial resources at his personal disposal to skew the direction of their activities. -
