    Has there been a discussion about why the party is in such a poor state, even compared to other leftist organisations? If COP26 achieved anything, it showed that there’s definitely a good number of young people in this country who think capitalism sucks. And considering that the average church has worse demographics than the SPGB, it’s not like that’s keeping people away.

    I’m not exactly an active member of the Party, but do you think extinction is a realistic possibility?

    My hope is that as the more mainstream left wing parties continue to be ineffective, the SPGB’s brand of socialism will show itself to be the alternative. Perhaps that’s a bit optimistic!

    Sadly, that’s probably the truth of the matter. This was supposed to be our last, great hope of solving climate change – but in the end COP26 was likely a net-loss to the fight against global warming, what with all the flights and hot air from politicians… The fact that so many people were discussing “system change not climate change” is heartening, but you can bet that system change won’t come from the likes of the SWP.

    I haven’t had much insight into Galloway’s antics on the campaign trail since he blocked me on Twitter, but I believe his was a very identity politics based campaign. Somehow I doubt Galloway’s alignment with the tankiest of Stalinists would be a vote winner if it was common knowledge…

    (Pleasantly?) surprised to see that Labour actually won Batley & Spen! Seems like Galloway’s attempt to be a spoiler candidate almost succeeded, though.

    Jack, I wonder why evangelical rapture Zionist-Christians in their attempts to turn the USA into a theocracy are rarely treated with the same vitriol as Muslim fundamentalists.

    It’s mysterious, isn’t it? I appreciate that I take a much more relaxed view towards religion than most here, but in my experience any attempt to mix religious and secular power ends badly for all involved. If nothing else, it exposes yet again the rampant hypocrisy of so many American evangelicals.

    Was that the article which claimed that Didsbury, arguably the most hipster student place on Earth, was somehow a hotbed of Sharia law?

    The advantage Johnson has, which May didn’t, is that he’s operating from a poltical position of strength. He has a sufficiently large majority in the Commons that the DUP don’t have the sway over him which they had over May. Even if someone wanted to challenge Johnson over this, no other Tory has the popular support he does. I suspect Johnson will end up throwing NI under the bus in the name of Brexit, which is essentially an English nationalist project.

    This is an interesting article, indicating how little factual basis a lot of these anti-abortion laws have;

    Starmer doesn’t seem to be Blair 2.0. He seems like he might actually be a vaguely reformist critic of capitalism, albeit rather a dull one… Still, it’s been quite entertaining to see so many self-proclaimed socialists departing the labour party, claiming it’s not a socialist party any more – as if it ever was!

    From a British perspective, it’s quite entertaining how swiftly the Tories discovered an entire grove of magic money trees. Turns out there is always money to spare – if the right people are asking…

    Bijou makes a very important point. Rather like climate change, the human race has collectively been aware of the risks of a pandemic for ages. Worse, we’ve had the means to mitigate or even prevent it. But the powers that be chose not to do this, instead putting their business interests first. The only reason we are in this situation is because our system of society puts profit before people. Seems to me that is one of the main arguments as to why capitalism is at fault here.

    Well – looks like I picked a great time to join! I’m obviously unfamiliar with the internal workings of the Party, but is this forum and SPINTCOM the mains means by which members keep up with each other?
