ParticipantDamn, I actually forgot that a few years ago I transcribed Steve Coleman chapter on Impossibilism that originally appeared in Crump and Rubel's Non-Market Socialism in the 19th and 20th Century:http://socialiststandardmyspace.blogspot.com/2009/08/impossibilism-by-stephen-coleman.htmlIt's not exactly what you're asking after but it touches upon aspects of the history of the SPGB.

ParticipantI like The Monument. I wish I still had my copy.A Party member from yesteryear – Steve Coleman – wrote his PhD on the early history of the SPGB back in the 80s. There was an epub of this doing the rounds a few months back but I don't have a download link immediately to hand.

Participant'cos I'm a lazy sod I'm just going to cut and paste the comment I made over on the SPGB group page on Facebook: I initially also bridled a bit at his mention of taxation of the rich line, but sod it, why hang the whole interview on that passage? The video's gone viral and not just because Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a half decent film. There's brilliant class anger in this interview and it's resonated with a hell of a lot of people.I thought it was a great interview and I'm not going dismiss him because I disagreed with a couple of things he said during those ten minutes.

ParticipantApologies if the links already been posted elsewhere but the ICC recently reviewed 'The Alternative to Capitalism':http://en.internationalism.org/icconline/201309/9122/book-review-alternative-capitalismAnd there is also quite a lengthy discussion of the review – and other matters arising – on their discussion list:http://en.internationalism.org/forum/1056/jk1921/9139/book-review-alternative-capitalism

ParticipantDJP wrote:I can easily set up a newsletter but it needs someone to volunteer to do it and it's not a high priority now, the last one was ditched because no-one was subscribed to it..As all of this has to be done in our spare time so please be patient.Maybe I was unclear in my original post when I described my proposal as a 'newsletter'.All I my asking is that visitors to the website are offered the option to subscribe to the website via email for updates to Socialist Standard archive and the audio section of the website. I threw in the suggestion about the current Socialist Standard as an afterthought. If the archive isn't updated then people won't receive emails. Simple as.I think the mention of a newsletter conjures up the image of a comrade having to sit down every month and write a fresh report. I understand if that's not what comrades want to do at the moment. I can't imagine my proposal being as high maintenance as that.If someone on the IT Dept knows the technical nuts and bolts of setting up such a email subscription list, I'd be happy to volunteer to compile the list twice a month.

ParticipantI guess there's newsletters and there's newsletters. There is a strong case for the SPGB doing something similar to what the Canadian comrades currently do, but in this particular case it was more about the idea of a newsletter that would draw attention to updates to the website. We've a rich archive and I think there are a layer of people out there who'd be interested in it, without necessarily at the same time aligning to us politically.

ParticipantSadly, my book has long gone but Rob has kindly provided the quote. It's a great book and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested in radical history. I think Wicks also mentions another SPGBer or ex-SPGBer – Johnny Holmes – in the book who was involved unemployment campaigns in the same period.cheers

ParticipantStuart,I'm sure your comment was tongue in cheek . . . as was the comment of the SPGB speaker. If that's what he actually said.cheers.

ParticipantAny plans to record this talk?

ParticipantHow did this go? I see from Urban 75 and Facebook that numbers at Marxism 2013 are well down on previous years.

ParticipantI think Jondwhite is right. Keable has been a longstanding supporter of CPGB/Weekly Worker.I wonder if this is just another one of their silly little stunts?

ParticipantIf there was any Thatcher obit for the Standard that was ready to go once she'd gone, I'd suggest it's put on the website as soon as possible. It shouldn't be held over until the May issue.

ParticipantThe mass resignations have started:http://internationalsocialismuk.blogspot.com/2013/03/fao-central-committee-of-socialist.htmlThe list includes Richard Seymour and China Mielville. It's definitely turned out to be the biggest split in the IS/SWP since the ISO in the mid-70s.I think it's fair to say that the SWP are now no longer the biggest group on the left. Step forward SP(EW). The spotlight is yours.

ParticipantI understand that's where their headquarters are now. No idea when they moved there from East London.I believe the Conference took place in Hammersmith.

ParticipantThe latest of the goings on within the SWP:http://www.cpgb.org.uk/assets/files/swpinternalbulletins/In_Defence_of_Our_Party.pdfA new faction formed – separate from Seymour and Mieville – that is critical of the decisions taken by the CC around this matter. Some big, big names within the SWP listed: Ian Birchall, Mike Gonzalez, Pat Stack, Colin Barker. This matter isn't going away, and the SWP's CC's hope they could just purge and move on is not an option at this point.
