Powerful stuff, Vin, yet there are still those who insist that the struggle for socialism has no moral dimension. If it doesn't then why include the heart-rending images in the video?

A suggestion: If we are to use videos like this to propagate the case for socialism then I think we need a stronger link  between effects and the causes of those effects. As it is the video consists of a montage of horrors with no analysis.

If it's a true democracy, you can't guarantee it wil be or remain socialist. ^^

Please note — we are not in the business of issuing promises of fulfillment (guarantees). Socialism requires majority agreement and understanding. We cannot underwrite the success of the socialist project. In socialism people will be free to organise to change those decisions made with which they disagree.Socialism will be established to deal with problems which capitalism throws up but which it cannot resolve.I personally cannot envisage any circumstances under which a majority would want to revert to capitalism. Whose interests would this serve? And what mechanisms would they have at their disposal?

According to Flemish tourism chiefs – who with Belgium's government have invested more than 50m euros (£42m; $67m) in centenary events – the anniversary is likely to make the many "must-see" WW1 attractions in the region even more popular than they were before. My emphasis.

Reported by Reuters (July 17th):"The question is what will be Japan's response …" said Nakano*. "But escalation of tensions leading to a war? I don't think so. The Americans will be watching this situation with grave concern and may play a role of a mediator here." China, the world's top energy user, is on a fast track to boost the use of natural gas, with demand for gas forecast to grow more than four fold by 2030 from the 147 bcm last year.China is the world's fourth biggest gas consumer. *Koichi Nakano is associate professor of political science at Sophia University in Tokyo. He does not explain how one "mediates" using  B52s.

Not yet the 1930s: "The shock that hit the world economy in 2008 was on a par with that which launched the Depression. In the 12 months following the economic peak in 2008, industrial production fell by as much as it did in the first year of the Depression. Equity prices and global trade fell more. Yet this time no depression followed.Although world industrial output dropped by 13% from peak to trough in what was definitely a deep recession, it fell by nearly 40% in the 1930s. American and European unemployment rates rose to barely more than 10% in the recent crisis; they are estimated to have topped 25% in the 1930s."The Economist 10 December 2011 url=http://www.economist.com/node/21541388

Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s banquet in the City, he called for a culture “that values that typically British, entrepreneurial, buccaneering spirit”

Serious or not he needs to look up the meaning of the word 'buccaneer'. According to my dictionary it means: 1.] pirate; 2.] an unscrupulous adventurer. Hold on… he was speaking to a gathering of thieves and parasites….

I heard on the grapevine that a member of your party argued in public, during your recent election campaign, that the TUSC candidate should be disqualified from standing for election as he was intent on breaking the law (by defying imposed austerity if elected). Extraordinary piece of anti-working-class, anti-socialist claptrap. I hope charges are being brought with a view to expelling this member?

Are there some Chinese Whispers on this particular grapevine? As I understand it the Electoral Commission has the power to declare an election invalid. As the member asked  "…doesn’t his condoning of breaking the law invalidate his candidacy?" This is a could statement not a should statement — it's pointing out a matter of fact not suggesting a course of action.

Well if that is not a criticism I don't what is. It could have been a bit more constructive too.  HH
