Here’s a double link to Shane and Fairytale of New York. Kirsty McColl (1959-2000)
featured with the Pogues and this is a song about New York written by Kirsty McColl and Johnny Marr. Kirst yote and sang songs about about many topics.
Her social commentary songs are subtle, for example ‘Free World.’ But ‘Walking down Madiso’n is overt in its take on capitalism in America.
One of the more hard hitting verses runs:
“They’re in a vicious circle of no fixed abode
The social won’t pay ’em the money they’re owed
When you’ve got no money you can’t pay rent
Hypothermia kills ’cause the system is bent.!davecogganParticipantGreat choice Paula.
Why are there not any songs matching this and it’s ilk today? Or are there?Well, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He’s got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We’re gonna have a whole lotta fun.

davecogganParticipantBut is there? Or are the roots of nationalism sprouting?
Call out the instigators
Because there’s something in the air
We got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution’s here
And you know it’s right
And you know that it’s right
We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now[Copyright material removed]

davecogganParticipantI see the bad moon a-risin’
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin’
I see bad times today
Don’t go around tonight
Well it’s bound to take your life There’s a bad moon on the rise

davecogganParticipantAnother exposition on capitalist reasons for Gaza-Israel conflict. Conspiracy theory? Youtuber is British-Syrian journalist.
davecogganParticipant“The fact is, then, that if machines are doing all the jobs, there will be no economy.
You won’t be able to buy anything because you won’t be earning anything.
And there’s no point going to the government for help because that won’t have any money either. Because machines don’t pay taxes.
They just spend all day making stuff. That no one can afford to buy.
This means we will need a whole new economy. A whole new system where there’s no such thing as money.
And that is the biggest worry of them all because no one has a clue what that might be.”

Given that JC is like marmite there’s no denying he is an intelligent person. The fact that he can make comments like this, and in an apparently genuine confused way says a lot.
davecogganParticipantPerhaps Australia should adopt this.

davecogganParticipantI must have led a sheltered life because I am completely at a loss to know of what you speak Imposs1904.
Shall we play a socialist version of Beat The Clock? Or should that be Twenty Questions? Does it have the word Foxtrot in the title or lyrics?
as in Foxtrot the system? Genre, might it be punk?
Surprisingly, the below is not age restricted or censored although Tom Robinson rewrote the lyrics to the spoken part many years on. It’s a diatribe against right wing government and oppression and one would think it was aimed at Tories although when released in 1978 there was a Labour government. TRB also sang ‘Glad to be Gay’. Even straights can’t help but sing along to the chorus on that one!
davecogganParticipantPlease listen to the words ZIW
davecogganParticipantCould you tell those of us who can’t be bothered to go through the rigmarole of accessing age restricted stuff what the classic is? Is there not another version of whatever it is available elsewhere?
davecogganParticipantIn the Arts, it can be hard to separate the performances/work produced by individuals who you wouldn’t want to know personally from the enjoyment derived from the work itself. ‘Cancelling’ someone might produce a virtuous moral glow but it can also be a cutting of your nose to spite your face. Not a Bragg fan but he did write A New England performed excellently by Kirsty McColl, who, in contrast to Bragg, I do love. Here’s a marmite example. I don’t like marmite but I don’t mind this.

davecogganParticipantExcellent video ALB. The majority of comments are positive. Difficult to know if you’re being trolled though? Biggest laugh I got was,‘Socialism doesn’t work, only right wing capitalism does.’ Then, capitalised, Read a book.’ What book might that be then?
