The trouble with sayings that claim to be truisms is that they are sometimes false.

There are about a billion people in the world who are going for days without a meal and they have not risen up but have only expressed despondency and despair.

The SPGB has always been cautious in assuming that suffering brings consciousness and warned against the Leftist approach of embracing workers’ immiseration as a means of politicalisation.

Russia said will launch military exercises in the country’s east that will involve China.

Vostok 2022 (East 2022) exercise will be held Sept. 1-7 in various locations in Russia’s Far East and the Sea of Japan and involve more than 50,000 troops, over 5,000 weapons units, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships.

Russian and Chinese navies in the Sea of Japan will “practice joint action to protect sea communications, areas of marine economic activity and support for ground troops in littoral areas.”

43% of Americans believe civil war is at least somewhat likely in the next 10 years, according to a new survey – a figure that increases to more than half among self-identified “strong Republicans”

Among strong Democrats and independents that figure was 40%. But among strong Republicans, 54% said civil war was at least somewhat likely.

We shouldn’t disparage any popular opposition and protest against the effects of government. A full belly is needed before socialist ideas fill the mind.

Our role is to be present to offer a socialist analysis for a better understanding of the participants.

We shouldn’t be perceived as kicking the victim when he or she is already on the ground but providing our answer in a sympathetic manner so they are receptive to our message and aren’t alienated by it.

‘Scientists should commit acts of civil disobedience to show the public how seriously they regard the threat posed by the climate crisis, a group of leading scientists has argued.

“Civil disobedience by scientists has the potential to cut through the myriad complexities and confusion surrounding the climate crisis,” the researchers wrote…’

I think it was the pandemic lockdown payments that brought UBI back onto the table.

Now various proposals on how to deal with the energy price rises in this cost of living crisis is producing a similar impetus to bring the idea to the agenda.

I came across the World Food Programme article that discusses how cash payments are seen as often the best approach to fend off hunger. Over the first half of 2022 alone, WFP has delivered US$1.6 billion in cash to 37 million people in 70 countries.

Are we getting closer to our slogan, “to each according to need”?

MS, Unless specifically proposed by the original poster I am reluctant to take any action.

The original poster although using the same thread title said she had a different purpose, ie exposing the lie that the Ukraine War is solely responsible. While the other is focused on the cost of living campaigns.

I don’t think the two identical titles at the present time proves so confusing for forum members. (It may do so later when more comments are added to one or the other.)

Putin recently signed a decree to increase the Russian armed forces by a potential 137,000.

Currently, Russia has a limit of just over a million military personnel, plus almost 900,000 civilian staff.

Two Israeli ex-diplomats speaking at a United Nations Security Council session examining the long-term impacts of maintaining the status quo in illegally occupied Palestine, publicly criticized their government’s policies against Palestinians, with one former negotiator of the Oslo Accords calling the growing use of the word “apartheid” around the world a “wakeup call” that must not be ignored.

Former Oslo negotiator, Daniel Levy said that denying basic human rights to Palestinians “will never be a recipe for achieving sustainable security…

…We know of certain developments that can at the same time be both politically uncomfortable and politically salient,” he added. “The increasingly weighty body of scholarly, legal, and public opinion that has designated Israel to be perpetrating apartheid in the territories under its control is just such a development.”

Former Israeli diplomat Alon Liel—who served in South Africa during the rule of that country’s Israeli-backed apartheid regime—said Israel’s designation of six Palestinian civil society groups as terrorist organizations followed a familiar pattern.

“It brings me back to apartheid South Africa and I am ashamed. These are my memories of South Africa, the chasing of the people of the struggle,”

The next best thing to a general strike?

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/27/uk-unions-waves-strikes-industrial-action-cost-living-crisis-autumn

Backed by the rail union RMT, Unite calls on the TUC to “facilitate and encourage industrial coordination between unions so workers in dispute can most effectively harness their union power to win”.

Another motion from Unison, the country’s biggest union, says the cost of living crisis is a “low pay crisis” and also demands that the TUC coordinate union action to campaign for pay rises “at least in line with inflation” – now 10.1% – as well as for a £15 per hour minimum wage.
