Went to one of those “Stop the Far Right” protests today (if only to show that we are not just keyboard commentators), in Brixton. Going by past events organised in Windrush Square by the SWP, I didn’t expect many and only took a few dozen copies of our Identity leaflet. But there were up to 300 there with one of the speakers being a local MP (Bell Ribeiro-Addy, one of our opponents in Clapham and Brixton Hill in the general election).

Speeches against “far-right thugs” and racism and chants of “refugees welcome here” (also once of “free, free, Palestine which those there seemed more familiar with), as well as understandable expressions of outrage and dismay about hostels for refugees being attacked.

The usual paper sellers were there : SWP, SPEW, RCP, even the WRP selling News Line as well as the CWO and us. Also present were five members of the police force.

I think some of them moved on afterwards to the Reform UK party HQ in Victoria st and then to Trafalgar Square.

Someone on X trotted out the line, we need a new party, Labour are useless?
I’m also concerned about the often trotted out “if Labour are Socialist. , l don’t want anything to do with Socialism “.

I of course jumped in, we already have a party, that has existed since 1904.
If there’s any misconceptions, I mentioned our Party object; is Socialism. We are registered with the Electoral Commission as the Socialist Party.
The ex Labour Militant Tendancy, which has stolen our name, failed to put our party name, the Socialist Party, on the ballot paper for their candidates in the election. Were forced to use their new name “Socialist Alliance”.
They also use under the umbrella organisation, TUSC, a left wing grouping, including SWP mob, and Trade union supporters.

    “Someone on X….”

Be mindful of how much time and energy you give to these platforms. They are not neutral means of communication but capitalist enterprises that exist for the purpose of generating advertising revenue. And they do that by mining their users data, and manipulating them to spend as much time on the platform as possible.

Another moan about SPEW ‘stealing’ your name. As you are registered with the Electoral Commission as the Socialist Party, if I were a member of SPEW I would urge the leadership to change the party name to the Socialist Party of Great Britain. Once you objected, SPEW would be entitled to ask: How many names do you have?
Wasn’t there a legal tussle with the Reconstituted SPGB over who was entitled to the full name? The Recons arguing you held on to it merely to collect bequests from dead members?

[Moderator note] The theme of this thread is the recent riots and the response, I’ll remove any more posts on the topic of the party’s name.

so, waddya reckon on my latest conspiracy theory that these riots were preplanned by the government? race riots crop up at ten year intervals since the neoliberals took over in 1979: 1981 brixton; 1991 meadow well; 2001 oldham; 2011 tontingham. this one being out of sequence due to covid. and there was something mighty iffy about fires and looting. when i’ve been on demos someone only needs to fart out of tune and the coppers are on you like flies on shit. come on now, it’s always the same, the government’s to blame. amirite?

(btw: can i have a waggly finger too? please! i wanna be with jimbo and essexboy in the incrowd. i never been trendy before. except that one time when i was ten and was the only kid in the school with a leatherjacket. the fact that it smelt of poo was besides the point.)

“it’s always the same, the government’s to blame. amirite?”

I think my favourite conspiracy theory right now is the one that Putin died from covid and has been replaced by a body double. Using the principle of “who benefits?” this can clearly be related back to the riots. Russia benefits from any disorder in Europe and so they clearly manufactured the whole thing. The slight delay in the ten-year pattern can be put down to the body double having to learn the ropes…

    Fault my logic.

To bring my joke comment back to the real world: I still wonder how much foreign influence (whether malicious or unintentional) contributed to the spread of misinformation at the start of these disturbances. I don’t think it was *the* determining factor, but it must have been one among many.

lumme lawks! i fink that was for the perfesser. sad face (can’t find how to do them here). still awaiting my telling orf. how about for badly grammar? poor spelling? not using capital letters (capital letters are capitalist! upper case is upper class!)?

    foreign influence on the riots?

china? nah. no money in it.

the rooshuns? possibly. the fuhrage has had money from them in the past and is known for opposing the war in ukraine. destablisation? yeah but this is strengthening the government’s case for a police state. anyone that might balk at five year sentences for civil disobedience is not going to give a shit about throwing the book at greggs boy. what’s in it for pootin?

the yanks? yeah, you betcha. nige has just been over to see the orange plague. fermenting race hatred is just up his street. treat this as a step towards a rightwing (faragist) takeover of the conservative party and the country at the next election.
