I'd say the difference would be over campaigning for reforms to capitalism (which they do and we don't) and over the definition of socialism (they think it's got to do with government ownership; we don't), but our companion party in the US should be able to tell you more:http://wspus.org/The wikipedia entry on our companion party there says:

    Quote:
… they criticize the Socialist Party USA for policies such as advocating full employment rather than dealing with the structural issue of the need for wage labor in capitalist society.

The principles of the SPUSA to which you provide a link confirms that this (which is impossible under capitalism and meaningless in socialism) is among the things they advocate.

SPUSA are not to be confused with the World Socialist Movement companion parties including WSPUS and SPGB.SPUSA describe themselves as multi-tendency and in the tradition known as 'democratic socialist' I think.

There is an article on the "broad church" approach in the latest Standard which might be applicable to the so-called "multi-tendency" approachhttp://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/socialist-standard/2010s/2013/no-1310-october-2013/left-unity-broad-church

Please attribute your quote: "The greatest American orator for socialism once said ‘It is better to vote for what you want and not get it, than to vote for what you don’t want and get it"Where can I find more info on broad-church or multi-tendency" approach?

The quote is from Eugene Debs, the SPof A presidential candidate from the early 20thC.I find his writings to be quite inspiring and my own sign-off signature is another of his well-known quotes. Others being "I am not a Labor Leader; I do not want you to follow me or anyone else; if you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of this capitalist wilderness, you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into the promised land if I could, because if I led you in, some one else would lead you out. You must use your heads as well as your hands, and get yourself out of your present condition"… …"Your Honor, years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind then that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it; and while there is a criminal element, I am of it; and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free." http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Eugene_V._Debs His writings can be found herehttp://www.marxists.org/archive/debs/

Here, for instance:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latitudinarianhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad_ChurchBut, seriously, the Labour Party in the UK has been described as a "broad church", i.e anybody can join whatever their views as long as they broadly share its aims.

Neither were SPGB companion parties, but the 'Socialist Party of America' (est. 1901) was the predecessor to the 'Socialist Party USA' (est. 1973). 'Socialist Party of America' (est. 1901) could claim over 100,000 dues paying members in early 1919. The 'multi-tendency' approach gradually emerging over the years seems to have reduced this membership. World Socialist Party of the United States (WSPUS) is a companion party to the SPGB and they left the Detroit section of the 'Socialist Party of America' in 1916 over political differences.
