During the GLA election in April/May a production team filmed the hustings in Putney as part of a programme they were doing for BBC2. In his speech our candidate, Bill Martin, read out Colonel Rich’s fear expressed during the Putney Debates of 1647:
“You have five to one in this kingdom that have no permanent interest. Some men have ten, some twenty servants — some more, some less. If the master and servant shall be equal electors, then clearly those that have no interest in the kingdom will make it their interest to choose those that have no interest. It may happen that the majority may, by law — not in a confusion — destroy property; there may be a law enacted that there shall be an equality of goods and estate.”
to make the point that, now we’ve all got the vote, it was about time we did this.
The producers seemed impressed. If they are going to use it it will be in part 6 of the “Great British Story” that will be broadcast on Friday 27 July from 7.30 to 8.30. Details here:

Available for about another three weeks. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01l9nkb/The_Great_British_Story_A_Peoples_History_The_Age_of_Revolution/ Relevant clip from around 42.17
July 28, 2012 at 10:18 am #88793ALBKeymasterFor the record as the programme will disappear after 3 weeks, what Bill, who was our candidate in Merton & Wandsworth for the London elections in May, is shown as saying at a hustings meeting in Putney is:
Quote:We are talking about creating a community of goods and abolishing the wages system and having common and democratic ownership and control of the means for producing and distributing wealth. Not very often that we hear about abolishing the wages system on the radio or TV.

A comrade phoned me last night to say he’d just seen the Party platform at Hyde Park with “Abolish the Wages System” on TV. I just checked and it’s 1hour 20 minutes into the film “London – The Modern Babylon” shown on BBC2 yesterday evening at 9.30. Can be seen again here:http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00smkqn/London_The_Modern_Babylon/Is anybody copying these for posterity?

Stolen by the renegades, perhaps? No, it was stored with an attendant at the underground car park at Hyde Park. When he was away once, his replacement cleared everything out including our platform. There were 2 of them. Don’t know what happened to the other one or where it was stored but neither left our possession.
