Your Man in the Public Gallery: the Assange Hearing Day 6

Here is accurate information for those seriously interested in this case, from Craig Murray who is one of the five people allowed in court. There are also links to defence witness statements which were severely restricted in court. The level of censorship and denial of justice in the public eye is horrifying.

I haven’t searched through UK media coverage but I’m guessing that it is pretty limited?

When will British and USA journalists develop a spine and go to the aid of Julian Assange?

It’s too late in the day for them, but anyway as put succinctly by Media Lens their jobs depend on them sticking to their corporate guns:

‘Absolute And Arbitrary Power’: Killing Extinction Rebellion And Julian Assange

Very few of those working in the msm have the balls to step out of line. There are some who make the decision to leave (ex-Guardian Jonathon Cook for instance) then they probably work as independents online with no secure income coming in.

By coincidence the Socialism Or Your Money Back blog had just posted this.

zusammenhang I like that. Also, thank you for the link.

I wonder if #FreeAssange is trending on Twitter? On seeing it, I thought that is what it meant?

    I just saw this piece.

“The frenetic mass media propaganda campaign against Julian Assange was easily the creepiest and most Orwellian thing I’ve ever witnessed. And now it is silent. It did its job and then disappeared, before the public could really notice what was happening. It’s absolutely stunning.

You wouldn’t know it now, but between late 2016 and Assange’s arrest social media was full of blue-checkmarked narrative managers falling all over each other to be the first to come up with the day’s hottest smear painting a heroic journalist as a villain. Day after day after day. Smearing Assange was one of the easiest ways for an aspiring journalist to show current and prospective employers that you’re on the side of the empire. He was a soft target you could kick to signal that you’ll say whatever the Pentagon wants so you can climb the media ladder.”

Today is verdict day, for Julian.

Well they let him off for the time being but it could well be overturned as the judge’s reasoning does not seem all that tight from a legal point of view (she ruled that he should normally have been extradited except for his health…). Not sure that would be upheld by a higher court. So, if he gets bail on Wednesday, he’d be well advised to start planning how to get to Russia.

The verdict can be easily overturned by a US appeal, her ruling was based on the mental health condition of Julian Assange only. Mexico offered asylum to him, but the USA has strong influences in Mexico, it could be the same case for Evo Morales who had to leave Mexico and move to Argentina. Probably, it would be advisable for him to move to Russia as Snowden did. They might hold his passport

The US are claiming legal victory and are expected to appeal.

What is so hypocritical is that Julian Assange had been refused bail by this same judge when he had requested it on ill-health grounds.

When the appeal comes it may well simply be a contest on who has the better prison system.

How else can the verdict be seen as a face-saving cop-out by the HM Government.

Most Federal and State prisons in the USA are run by private contractors, and they are always willing to have new inmates, it is a profitable business and less expensive for the US government

This (taken from the Defend Assange Campaign) lists the main points and the judge’s response to them. Clear and to the point.

US Imperialism Defeated: UK Court Blocks Extradition of Julian Assange

Craig Murray, the only person allowed in the public gallery yesterday wrote the following short piece and will be posting again very soon:

    Julian Assange: Imminent Freedom

During the 2016 US election campaign, Donald Trump defended and supported Julian Assange, and now he does not support him, and Obama gave a pardon to the person who provided the information to WikiLeaks

A shameful decision to keep Julian Assange in prison while the court awaits the USA appeal against the judgement.
