He doesn't say which group he was briefly in, if he was in a particular group that is. He is talking about the mid-70s as he left college in 1975. In those days there were even more Trot groups than the 57 varieties that exist today.

In this I can't help feeling the continual assertion of Marxism with Socialism is in part to blame. Like many middle class people I came to Socialism through Marxism (to be more specific through Deutscher's biography of Trotsky). The trouble with Marxism is that it is fine if you make it your political servant but terrible if it becomes your political master.I actually did trouble to read Marx first hand. I found it illuminating in so many ways; in particular, my perception of the relationship between people and the society in which they live, was irreversibly altered. But ultimately it was stifling because it sought to embrace in its philosophy every facet of existence. That of course is its attraction to many. It gives them a total perspective on life. But that can simply become an excuse to stop searching for the truth.and this beauty:
Quote:T Benn is in one sense quite right in saying that the right wing of the Party is politically bankrupt. Socialism ultimately must appeal to the better minds of the people. You cannot do that if you are tainted overmuch with a pragmatic period in power.August 10, 2017 at 11:59 am #129136Young Master SmeetModeratorOf course, Deutscher biography was a hagiography,…
August 11, 2017 at 9:40 am #129137jondwhiteParticipantCould it be IS? It would be ironic considering how fond of 'Bliar' (sic) placards during the invasion of Iraq. Surely even IS wouldn't have the front to conceal something like that?IMG?SLL seems more like Alistair Campbell type breeding grounds.Could it be a complete fabrication to tack left to gauge support for launching a breakaway party? Why this would garner any significant support I don't know, there really aren't that many Trots in Britain however much they like to overstate their numbers.
August 12, 2017 at 9:15 am #129138ALBKeymasterI don't think that he was in fact in any Trot organisation only that he toyed with Trotskyist ideas after reading Deutscher biography of him. Personally, I can't understand why anyone should be impressed with Trotsky's life. It was a complete political failure.
