Just seen a most disturbing interview on RT's "Going Underground" programme. The interviewee talked of the imminent rise in the death rate in countries like the UK – doubling, trebling even quadrupling. Why? Because of the growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Two thirds of antibiotics are used in farming as production tools to lower costs because the supermarkets' demand for cheaper meat products from the farmers. So the profit motive is directly and incontrovertibly contributing to a situation where, in the future, if we needed – say – chemotherapy or a hip replacement, we might not be able to get these things because it will be considered too dangerous without supportive anti-biotics. This is insane. Our "glorious" market economy is based on the economics of the madhouse and this is becoming more and more obvious in more and more ways. In this particular case the prospects are quite frightening frankly and could very directly affect you or I next time we are hospitalised. Here's some info from Compassion in World Farming.
