2016's Summer School will be held over the long weekend 22nd – 24th July, at Fircroft College in Birmingham. The theme of the event's talks and workshops is… up to you! There are four potential subjects – Democracy, Money, Borders, and Left and Right – which anyone can vote for by posting a ballot paper at head office. There's a small display there about the event, and a ballot box. So, if you're going to ADM, please take the time to have a look and give your opinion. The theme with the most votes after 4th November will be the one chosen for Summer School. This isn't an official party vote, by the way.

The concessionary rate will be £50. Day visitors are welcome, but will be required to book in advance.More information, including the topic of this year's school, will be announced quite soon.

It might also be the most potentially fruitful if you can engage organisations like TZM and the Money Free Party
January 19, 2016 at 1:26 am #114840alanjjohnstoneKeymasterRobbo, no doubt there will be a video following the School, and if they do go with the money, i think they should draw attention to the resultant video to those groups. Since it is now after 4th November can you tell us the theme for JulyMe, unlike Robbo, i would have opted for Borders considering the prominence of EU exit, migrant workers and refugee crisis. But they we all good subjects…contemporary..left and right, Corbyn and Trump, Democracy…Poland protests about democratic dictatorships,

February 19, 2016 at 6:35 pm #114842AnonymousInactiveMoney Talks Money flows through every aspect of society, and therefore affects every aspect of our lives. What possessions we have, the efficiency of the services we use, and how we are supposed to value ourselves are all shaped by the money system. We’re encouraged to think of the economy in much the same way as we think about the weather – something changeable, but always there. When the climate is ‘good’, life feels brighter. When the climate is ‘bad’, we huddle down until we can ride out the storm. Although we’ll always have the weather, the economy doesn’t have to be permanent. Our weekend of talks and discussion looks at the role of money in our society. In what ways does money affect how we think and behave? How does the economy really function? How did money come to be such a dominant force? We also look forward to a moneyless socialist society, which will be – in more than one sense of the word – free. Full residential cost (including accommodation and meals Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) is £100. The concessionary rate is £50. Day visitors are welcome, but please book in advance. CLICK HERE TO BOOK ONLINETo book a place, send a cheque (payable to the Socialist Party of Great Britain) to Summer School, Sutton Farm, Aldborough, Boroughbridge, York, YO51 9ER, or book online. March 27, 2016 at 12:10 pm #114843Mike FosterParticipantThe first confirmed session for this year's 'Money Talks' Summer School is Janet Surman discussing a moneyless society: 'Profiting From A Moneyless World'. Stay tuned for further details!
April 3, 2016 at 6:47 pm #114844Mike FosterParticipantThe next confirmed Summer School talk is Adam Buick who will present 'An Idiot's Guide To Banking: How To Avoid Being A Currency Crank'. This will explain how banks work by comparing them with individuals lending money, moneylenders, pawnbrokers, building societies, credit unions, peer-to-peer lending etc and showing how nobody can lend what they haven't got.
May 9, 2016 at 6:44 pm #114845Mike FosterParticipantThe next confimed session is The Root Of All Evil? How money affects behaviour and attitudes: some short videos selected by Darren Poynton.
May 10, 2016 at 6:31 pm #114846Mike FosterParticipantAt Summer School there will be an exhibition on the SPGB's views on money and a moneyless society over the decades. This will include some rarely-seen articles from the Socialist Standard, leaflets, posters and cartoons. More news soon!
May 10, 2016 at 6:42 pm #114847alanjjohnstoneKeymasterIf this exhibition is mobile, would it be a good idea to later move it across the country with all our local branches organising public meetings on the topic?I first joined the Party in the 70 during the '7 Days For Socialism' campaign, a series of public meetings held by branches. I wonder if we could do the same. '7 Days for Money-Free World' Just a thought
May 19, 2016 at 8:03 pm #114848Mike FosterParticipantThanks for the suggestion. It's a bit early for me to think about what to do with the display after Summer School, but I'll see what I can do.
May 20, 2016 at 9:43 am #114849Mike FosterParticipantThe next session which can be confirmed is Colin Skelly giving a talk about Labour-Time Vouchers And Socialism. More updates soon!
