I’ve been an active user on Reddit for some time and believe that the Party could use the website as a platform for promoting ourselves and our ideals. I thought I would post my thoughts here and we could discuss whether or not this might be viable.
What is Reddit?
For those unfamiliar with Reddit, from wikipedia:
Reddit is a social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site such as links, text posts, and images, which are then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called “subreddits”, which cover a variety of topics including news, science, movies, video games, music, books, fitness, food, and image-sharing. Submissions with more up-votes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough votes, ultimately on the site’s front page.
Here is a simple beginners guide for anyone interested: https://mashable.com/2012/06/06/reddit-for-beginners/
Reddit’s voting system means that the community can upvote quality posts which gives them a higher ranking and adds to the posters ‘karma’.
How do we participate?
The Party has a great strength in the quality of it’s writing and ideological arguments, both in our formal publications and on the forum. By signing up to Reddit, we could participate in subreddits where the general public frequently post questions and thoughts about socialism. By participating in theses conversations, we could promote the Party. Some of the subreddits we could participate in are r/socialism (166k subscribers), r/communism (75k subscribers), r/Anarchism (144k subscribers), r/CapitalismVSocialism, and many more. We could even engage on ‘opposition’ subreddits, like r/Anarcho_Capitalism — although we’d need to tread carefully to not get banned.
Party members could sign up to reddit, take part in these conversations and gently promote the Party and socialism in general. We could have some means of identifying ourselves as SPGB members (not sure how) but this isn’t required.
We could also set up our own subreddit for the SPGB, where we could post links to our own publications and engage with the public more directly. Additionally, we could contact the moderators of some of the other subreddits and ask them to link to ours.
I believe that those who write for the Party and those who participate in the forum would positively add to the conversations that take place. And we can coordinate that effort to promote the SPGB.
In closing, I think the idea could use some discussion and refinement and, if we go ahead with it, some initial set up (like our own subreddit) but all-in-all it feels like an activity that plays to our strengths and could greatly benefit the Party.
Thoughts?

I’m more familiar with Quora than Reddit but will certainly look into the latter myself, The idea of setting up a subreddit looks attractive
