Paul Krugman V Richard Wolff on socialism

    https://www.alternet.org/2020/02/american-democracy-is-on-the-line-watch-economists-paul-krugman-and-richard-wolff-debate-socialism-and-2020/

PAUL KRUGMAN: OK. I mean, Bernie says he loves Denmark. I love Denmark. I think Denmark is an illustration of how decent a society can be. The Danes don’t think that they’re socialists. They think that they’re social democrats. They don’t use the word “socialist.” And it isn’t socialism as we’ve always used to understand it. It’s not government ownership of the means of production. It’s not seizing the commanding heights of the economy. It’s a really strong social safety net and a strong labor movement, all of which I support.

RICHARD WOLFF: Sure. There is no agency, neither public nor private, that defines what a socialist is. If you follow the socialist movement for the last 150 years, you would discover that it has been a contested terrain from day one. There were different interpretations and different meanings. Bernie Sanders is perfectly in line with one of the traditions of what socialism is. It’s the government having a big role in offsetting some of the awful qualities of capitalism.

AOC concedes that M4A is unlikely to be passed as Sanders envisages it and that he will have to make concessions and compromise.

“A president can’t wave a magic wand and pass any legislation they want,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told HuffPost this week.
Ocasio-Cortez ― one of the most outspoken advocates for Medicare for All ― said she thought voters understood there was an “inherent check” on the president’s ability to actually change things like our health care system. “The worst-case scenario? We compromise deeply and we end up getting a public option. Is that a nightmare? I don’t think so,” she said.

“They accused Dr. King of being a communist,” Sharpton said. “Every major leader in the 60s they tried to call socialist or communist. Whatever you decide to do on Saturday, do not go by those that use the ‘socialist’ tag to try to separate us from what we need to do for this country… And we are not that stupid to allow you to tell us who is what.”

The response that you received is a clear indication that peoples are confused about the real meaning of socialism, and that the worst thing that ever happened to socialism was the emergence and creation of the Soviet Union and the spreading  of Leninism/Stalinism around the world

Well, it was posted by a real socialist, no by a Social Democrat, or apologist of the Welfare State. Left-wingers are talking about socialized medicine within capitalism and run by the state, some dictators promoted the same type of medical system. A so-called socialist said that I was a rightwinger and pacifist  because I was advocating for a  society without states , wage system, without wars,  nations and borders

Probably, sovietism was the one who turned socialism into a dirty word

Democrats leaders will do all kind of tricks to stop the presidential nomination of Bernie Sanders. including selecting Bloomberg as the presidential candidate who can buy his own nomination ( The best Democracy that money can buy, Greg Palast )  Probably, he would be forced to run as an independent candidate or form his own political party like it has been done in some countries around the world. His election will not make any difference either, it would be capitalist business as usual

    https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/03/02/absolutely-remarkable-poll-shows-democratic-voters-texas-and-california-view

“Texas and California—the two states with the most pledged delegates to award on Super Tuesday—view socialism more positively than capitalism, according to a CBS News/YouGov tracking poll released Sunday.
The survey showed 56% of Democratic primary voters in Texas and 57% in California have a favorable view of socialism. Just 37% of Democratic voters in Texas and 45% in California have a positive view of capitalism, ”

Researcher Kadira Pethiyagoda wrote Monday that Texas voters’ relatively positive view of socialism is “no surprise… for those of us who’ve long highlighted the history of economic left-wing politics in rural areas—the original populism!”

But as Jacobin says it is an undefined socialism

“I care more about advancing class struggle and a political program that can help working people than how an undefined ‘socialism’ and ‘capitalism’ polls, but this is still an absolutely remarkable development,” tweeted Bhaskar Sunkara, publisher of the socialist magazine Jacobin.
