Yanis Varoufakis and Bernie Sanders team up for “Progressives International”. Incoming Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador will reportedly be invited to join
(Hmm…what’s the count now for Internationals?)
“The financiers are internationalists. The fascists, the nationalists, the racists—like Trump, Bannon, Seehofer, Salvini—they are internationalists,” Varoufakis said. “They bind together. The only people who are failing are progressives.”
Sanders wrote in the Guardian, “At a time of massive global wealth and income inequality, oligarchy, rising authoritarianism, and militarism, we need a Progressive International movement to counter these threats.” Warning that “the fate of the world is at stake,” the senator called for “an international progressive agenda that brings working people together around a vision of shared prosperity, security, and dignity for all people.”
Varoufakis, denouncing the global “brotherhood” of financiers and “xenophobic rightwing zealots” who foment divisiveness to control wealth and politics, said in the Guardian that those who join the movement “need to do more than campaign together,” and proposed the formation of “a common council that draws out a common blueprint for an International New Deal, a progressive New Bretton Woods… Austerity for the many and socialism for the bankers has given rise to the present fascist moment in Italy, to the collapse of the political center everywhere, and to the reactionary, divided Europe that Mr. Trump dreams of,” Varoufakis said.

It is a shame that when he cites Hillquit of the SPA he doesn’t respond with Debs of the SPA but rather resorts to a Lenin quote (perhaps a clue to his sympathies)
But for the record, Debs more appropriate reply to left-wing anti-immigration

March 7, 2019 at 9:00 am #184167ALBKeymasterActually, that quote from Lenin is not all that bad (incidentally, I don’t think Varouflakis quoting him means he has Leninist sympathies). For the benefit of those who didn’t read the link, here’s the quote (from October 1913):
There can be no doubt that dire poverty alone compels people to abandon their native land, and that the capitalists exploit the immigrant workers in the most shameless manner. But only reactionaries can shut their eyes to the progressive significance of this modern migration of nations. (…) capitalism is drawing the masses of the working people of the whole world (…) breaking down national barriers and prejudices, uniting workers from all countries (…).
