There are numerous unrecognised states from Turkish- controlled Northern Cyprus to Somaliland (Puntland and Galmudug are other states formed out of Somalia) and then there is Sahrawi (Western Sahara). And of course the ongoing disputes of the diplomatic status of Taiwan
But these are the ones from the former USSR in addition to the Ukrainian breakaways

Sanctions against Russia
February 23, 2022 at 1:30 am #226834alanjjohnstoneKeymasterAlthough we recognise that RT is an unreliable source of information, it is an alternative to the equally biased other media outlets.
The Labour Party has chosen to demand the silencing of RT.
Starmer, the Labour leader, told MPs that the Russian president’s “campaign of misinformation should be tackled”, starting with moves to prevent RT from “broadcasting its propaganda around the world”.

After all the big talk about what would happen if Russia invaded, just a slap on the wrist; just five banks and a trio of oligarchs targetted. Perhaps they feel partly responsible for the situation by pouring arms into Ukraine which were obviously going to be used at some point to try to crush the breakaway statelets.
And who will be collateral damage — the workers as usual, in this case with even higher gas bills.
And what can we say about the despicable Labour Party — “the Party of NATO” — and its despicable leader. He probably would have let Savile off the hook if it would increase his chance of becoming prime minister.

Ms Truss said that “nothing is off the table” when it came to hitting Moscow with further sanctions, as she was asked whether donors to the Conservative Party could be among those targeted.“We are very clear that nothing is off the table in terms of who we’re targeting, in terms of the access of Russia to British financial institutions,” she told Sky News.
“We are maintaining our alliance with our international allies to make sure that we are targeting those key people who are backing and supporting Putin’s regime … I don’t rule out anything.”
Asked if any Russia-linked money should be handed back by the Tories, Ms Truss added: “All of donations to the Conservative Party are from people on the electoral register in Britain, those donations are properly declared.”
The foreign secretary confirmed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson “misspoke” when he told MPs on Tuesday that Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich had previously been sanctioned by the UK.
Asked whether the billionaire should have been sanctioned, Ms Truss said: “I’m not going to go into details of what our future sanctions plans are, but nothing is off the table.”

Looks like UEFA will move the Champions League final in St Petersburg in Russia.
What happened?February 23, 2022 at 9:56 am #226844AnonymousInactiveIn the background on footage from one of the trenches on the Ukraine/Donbass front line:
On the wall, a black banner reading
MISANTHROPIST BATALLION.February 23, 2022 at 10:11 am #226845ALBKeymasterSounds as if that could be one reason why the EU is interested but I suspect NATO’s interest will be more geopolitical, to try to press home its victory in the Cold War by continuing to kick Russia while it is down.
Anyway it has nothing to do with defending democracy. The Economist Intelligence Unit classifies Ukraine “a hybrid regime, somewhere between a flawed democracy and an authoritarian state”. And of course it has its own oligarchs.
February 23, 2022 at 10:13 am #226846AnonymousInactiveKicking a downed Russia that nonetheless has the power to kill us all!
