No, it isn’t. And the Wikipedia entry doesn’t say that. The present Ukrainian government might aspire to but it has not happened and probably won’t for the time being. Russia has made it clear that it, if it did, this would be a cause for war and NATO has no intention of defending Ukraine militarily. They are only rattling economic sanctions.

Membership to NATO requires unanimous agreement

With Germany already refusing to supply Ukraine with military hardware, I think we can safely speculate that it would veto Ukraine from joining.

Hungary also would be very likely to oppose Ukraine’s admission.

Hungary is already rebuffing NATO efforts to reinforce it.

So Ukraine isn’t a proper “bourgeois democracy” that Western politicians and media give the impression it is. In fact the political and economic superstructure in Ukraine is not much different than that in Russia. So the argument that it is “democratic” while Russia isn’t and that “we” must support it to defend “democratic values” doesn’t wash.

The present tensions are not about that but about the US-led Western capitalist bloc wishing to incorporate Ukraine into its sphere of influence and capitalist Russia resisting this. Naked power politics. Not an issue worth the shedding of a single drop of working class blood.

So the most it would become is a Vietnam situation?

The issue mentioned by Adam Buick it is something that most leftists do not understand, either Russia and Ukraine are not the typical bourgeoise democracy, still, they carry a lot of issues from the past or from Stalinism and soviet state capitalism. As Stefan indicated in another message, Ukraine can not become a member of Nato, any country with internal problems like Ukraine can not become a member of NATO, the USA and England will continue providing weapons to the government and Russia will continue providing weapons to the nationalists, and both would be forced to retreat. For the moment Ukraine will not become a member of NATO. The main purpose of the USA is to get closer to the Russian border and Russia does not want the USA next to its border, similar to the case in North Korea, China does not want the USA closer to its border either

Russia is planning to fabricate a pretext for an invasion of Ukraine, by falsely blaming Ukrainian military for an attack on Russian-backed separatists or Russia itself, US officials say.

Is this a repeat of the earlier British unfounded claim? Are the US and the UK re-playing the Iraq WMD game-plan where they cite one another’s false intelligence as credible sources?

    Gleiwitz again?

But a far more recent example was in the Kuwait War and to bring Saudi Arabia fully on board with the alliance, the USA claimed Iraqi tanks were poised on the border ready to invade – a brazen lie.

Is it a repeat of the Bush-Blair propaganda strategy of confirming one another’s inconclusive intelligence on Iraq’s WMD.

Downing Street has said it has “high confidence” Russia is planning to fabricate a reason for incurring on Ukraine.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “We have high confidence Russia is planning to engineer a pretext blaming Ukraine for an attack in order to justify a Russian incursion into Ukraine.”

“The details in the specific reports today are credible and extremely concerning. We’ve conducted our own analysis on this intelligence and share the US’s conclusion.”

Why would Putin want to invade and plunge into a mutually suicidal war when he has concluded a highly lucrative gas deal with China, promising years of massive profits?

Accumulate, accumulate, that is the Moses and the prophets.

I noted that the deal will be paid in Euros, not dollars, another blow for the US
