Don’t approve of the disparaging (again) misuse of the word medieval.
September 9, 2022 at 6:16 pm #232845OzymandiasParticipantI read a very good article in the Standard a few years ago about the Monarchy and how it is utilised by the owning class in this country to maintain passivity among us proles. The article described how other nations employed their own methods… Statues of Sadaam in Iraq, Allegiance to the flag in the US, empty slogans like “Egalite, Liberte, Fraternite” etc in France etc etc. Can anyone give me a link?

(thanks to ALB reminding us of it)
” Behind the person of the King the capitalists can hide the fact that it is they in reality who rule. By parading their kings before the workers at every possible opportunity, and with every circumstance of pomp and display that their ingenuity can invent, by investing them with divine right and something of divinity itself, the capitalists awaken and stimulate and nurture that spirit of reverence which is so deadly an enemy to the growth of revolutionary ideas, and so detract attention from themselves.”

We will never know as in the case of her husband, Philip, her will won’t be made public
September 10, 2022 at 3:58 pm #232897james19ParticipantCapitalists and their mouthpiece, the media, are forever warning workers the dangers of unelected trade union leaders.
There’s now new unelected prime minister, an unelected, (by stint of parentage parasite) head of state.
We should not take lectures from the capitalist class!

September 11, 2022 at 1:00 am #232922alanjjohnstoneKeymasterJust to comment on the Royal apologists statistics,
Polling ahead of the celebrations for the country’s first-ever platinum jubilee earlier this year suggested that 62% of Britons said they supported the monarchy.
A decade earlier, however, the same polling company – YouGov – reported that figure was 11 points higher, at 73%.
YouGov polling also revealed that almost a quarter – 22% – of people in the UK now support abolishing the monarchy, a pronounced increase from a decade earlier.September 11, 2022 at 2:56 am #232924alanjjohnstoneKeymasterTallaght stadium in Dublin tonight pic.twitter.com/FhHtoVGT1L

September 11, 2022 at 4:12 pm #232947rodshawParticipantFootball decided to pay its respects to the Queen by cancelling all fixtures over the entire weekend, right down to school level. Apparently it was thought that fans might run riot and cause a policing problem. This attracted much criticism, if not disdain, from other sports and many football pundits. The football authorities have been accused of not trusting their own fans to behave themselves.
But of course, the opponents of the decision to cancel fixtures based their view not on any disregard for the monarchy, but because they thought there were more appropriate ways for people to pay their respects.
Ho-hum.September 11, 2022 at 8:50 pm #232995james19ParticipantThis is amazing. It’s what she would have wanted.

September 12, 2022 at 1:13 am #233009alanjjohnstoneKeymaster82-yr old Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is Europe’s longest-serving monarch and only reigning queen.
After 50 years on the throne, Margrethe is now the longest-serving living monarch in the world.
Her son, Crown Prince Frederik, 54, is due to succeed her.
The second-longest-serving monarch is King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, who has been on the throne for 49 years.
The Sultan of Brunei has been on the throne for 54 years, but opinions are divided as to whether he should be considered the world’s longest-serving monarch, due to the fact that the country only became independent from Britain in 1984.
