An article critical of the “lesser evil” strategy of voting in the coming US election between Biden and Trump by Jonathan Cook
“At the very moment when the US two-party political system may be beginning to break down, when it has no answers to the first wave of major global crises to hit western “civilisation”, Jay and many others on the progressive left continue to argue that it is imperative to engage with the system, for gradualism, for assisting with those who try to make the system seem better, look more humane.”

The Biden senatorial papers comprise 1,875 boxes of “photographs, documents, videotapes and files” and 415 gigabytes of electronic records at the University of Delaware in his home state.

Biden plans to travel to Houston to meet with the family of George Floyd and will provide a video message for Floyd’s funeral service.

June 16, 2020 at 12:07 am #203989alanjjohnstoneKeymasterIt seems as if the pendulum has swung in Biden’s favour. His early strategy of doing little and hoping events would expose Trump has seemingly paid off with the pandemic and the protests.
However, the media now claim that this has emboldened Biden and he is now growing more radical. Yet little evidence is provided apart from the usual politician rhetoric. No real policy change has been announced.
The pandemic has not brought Biden towards Medicare4All. He hasn’t taken responsibility for his past law and order policies that contributed to the racialisation of crime and has distanced himself from defund the police – fancy name for cutting police department budgets and re-directing the savings towards some social services such as mental health. (as an aside after some crimes attributed to mental health issues Blair promised more psychiatric nurses – so he created “community psychiatric nurses”, reduced the rigorous course length and made much of it on-the-job training)

June 16, 2020 at 12:30 am #203995alanjjohnstoneKeymasterTo underscore the above post that there is no change in substance for Biden
The Democratic National Committee’s council on climate change irked party leadership when it published policy recommendations this month that ventured beyond presidential candidate Joe Biden’s plan…The council’s proposals far exceed Biden’s current climate plan
One senior Democrat familiar with the DNC’s workings said climate council members overstepped by putting out recommendations ahead of the convention that are unlikely to be adopted in the party’s platform, which will be drafted by a DNC committee by its August convention.
“It’s a nonstarter,” said the Democrat, who requested anonymity to discuss the matter. “Nobody takes them seriously. Joe Biden will be writing the platform for our national convention.”

Check the real history of the USA since the very beginning and you will see the same pattern all the time, even more, there was one single presidential candidate who pretended to be against war and a warmonger was elected instead of him.
PS The USA has had only three real historians and they are: Francis Jennings, Howard Zinn and Gerald Horne, the rest, they are just storytellers, and many historians from Latin America know more about the real history of the USA than the national historians
June 17, 2020 at 12:56 am #204077alanjjohnstoneKeymasterOmar Iihan says she will do her utmost to get Biden elected even though she believed Tara Reade’s sexual assault claim and thinks Biden has repeatedly lied about the incident.

Just where will she draw the line on a president’s conduct…what is allowable in his personal behaviour. But of course she is a follower of a religion where the founder married a 6 year old and consummated the marriage when she was 9 years old. Hypocrisy is inherent in her mind-set.

The so-called Squad has completely capitulated along with Bernie Sanders.
June 20, 2020 at 3:19 am #204248alanjjohnstoneKeymasterAn interesting article on the lesser of two evils comparing Chomsky and Greenwald.
Chomsky believes that it is so imperative that Trump be defeated that he will vote for Biden. “the future of humanity is at stake, this is a unique moment.”
Greenwald argues that when you pledge your unconditional support to politicians, you have no leverage: “They have no reason to do anything but ignore you with contempt because you’ve put yourself in a subservient position . . . where you say, ‘I don’t care how much you trample on my values, I’m still going to vote for you.’ Why would anybody listen to a group of people who say that?” Politicians are not going to make concessions to people who have already pledged, at the end of the day, to vote for them anyway. This strategy, for Greenwald, guarantees your impotence. Politicians are going to give concession to people who they believe they still must win over.
