Having suggested that the Democratic Party used quasi-religious images in Biden’s speech, it seems that he was not religious enough for the Republican. Trump falsely accused the convention of dropping the name of God from the pledge of allegiance,
August 23, 2020 at 10:31 pm #206042alanjjohnstoneKeymasterKamala Harris’s father, Jamaica-born economist Donald Harris taught for most of his career at Stanford.
He had some insight into society
“It stretches the imagination to see why,” he wrote in 1972, “black workers should in any way be better off under black owners than under white owners.” If radicals did not work to dismantle or reform the capitalist system, Harris argued, they would accomplish little for black people. “The colonial analogy might be seen as playing a useful ideological role for those who stand to benefit from the ‘transfer of power’ which this is expected to bring about,” he wrote. “It plays another role also for those whites who see the black struggle as a vicarious means for waging their own, failing thereby to understand the nature of their own struggle as well as that of blacks.”
Obama’s Kenyan father too had a wider understanding of the world
As a young government economic planner in Jomo Kenyatta’s postcolonial administration in Kenya, Obama Senior issued a withering report claiming that the government was simply replacing foreign elites with Kenyan ones, expropriating the land for its private use, and paying lip service to “African socialism” when it intended to pursue nothing of the sort.
It seems indeed in both these families, the apple did fall well away from the tree

“Two things I would say if I was advising an administration,” Rahm Emanuel, former chief of staff to President Barack Obama, said during an interview with CNBC Friday. “One is there’s no new Green Deal, there’s no Medicare for All”

August 30, 2020 at 1:44 am #206231alanjjohnstoneKeymasterThe postal vote seems to be a very artificial conflict between Biden and Trump.
If either is serious that COVID-19 will impact upon voter turn-out why not simply extend polling day. Open the voting booths on Monday and Wednesday as well as Tuesday. But they need differences , don’t they to justify the two-party system.
September 4, 2020 at 1:29 am #206346alanjjohnstoneKeymasterI earlier mentioned the religious imagery of Biden’s speeches and once again he returns to such metaphors.
“We’re finally now getting to the point where we’re going to be addressing the original sin of this country, 400 years old … slavery and all the vestiges of it,” Biden said at Grace Lutheran Church. “I can’t say if tomorrow God made me president, I can’t guarantee you everything gets solved in four years,” Biden said. But “it would be a whole better, we’d get a whole lot further down the road”

I once read in a poll that the very last person Americans would elect as President would be an atheist.

So, the US is a theocracy now. Not that it would make any difference if it was, since the christian god could no more control how capitalism works than an elected President. There is an added difficulty if you don’t exist.

I may say that the last presidential candidate would be a pacifist or an anti-war candidate, there was one in the past, and he lost the nomination, patriotism, Narrow nationalism, foreign enemies, national security and war heroes are part of the electoral campaign, and finding enemies in other countries is part of that campaign too, a small island like Grenada according to Ronald Reagan was a threat to the USA, and the priest ( Catholics and Episcopal ) and nuns of the Liberation theology were also a threat to the USA, therefore, the religious card can be played inside, but outside of the USA, it does not work. The USA government overthrew Aristides in Haiti who was a priest and representative of the liberal Haitian bourgeoise, and they have religious leaders to overthrow others governments like the Catholic church was used to overthrow Juan Bosh and Trujillo in the Dominican Republic
==============================
The Christian religion has always played an important role in the USA political landscape, it does not move mountains as the Bible says, but it moves voters for the presidential candidates, most of the supporters of Donald Trump are white Christians, and most of the supporters of Joe Biden are black Christians and black pastors who promoted him instead of Bernie Sanders, there are many blacks who are also members of the USA capitalist class
The so-called religion tolerance is only a lie because Protestantism is the official religion, ( like in Latin America the official religion is Catholicism ), and it is categorized as a Christian nation, and in the past, there was a great repulsion against Catholicism like at the present there is a great repulsion against Islam, but Catholicism might become the second religion of the USA, and Spanish ( Castilian ) is going to be the second spoken language in the USA.
It might be a wake-up call for the WSPUS, several ML organizations have bilingual literature, bilingual forums, they have translators in their party meetings, and they are recruiting members from the Latin America community, it is ironic that the DSA is having young sympathizers within the Cuban community in Florida.
Donald Trump is attacking the religious sentiment of Joe Biden, but he is not a churchgoer, and he does not have any theological knowledge either, but Biden is a Catholic who attends church every Sunday with his wife, if he wins the presidential election, he would be the second catholic which would be conducting the warships of the USA like JFK who was also a catholic

Biden hires Pete Buttigieg, along with senior officials who served under President Barack Obama, to an expanded White House transition team.
Biden added four new co-chairs to the team led by his longtime ally Ted Kaufman: New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, former Obama economic adviser Jeffrey Zients, Louisiana Representative Cedric Richmond and his campaign adviser, Anita Dunn, as well as, former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, and Susan Rice, national security adviser to Obama. Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who has been advising Biden on the pandemic response, has also joined the transition team.
Perhaps this is the sop to the left. I don’t know their histories
Teresa Romero, president of the United Farm Workers; Lonnie Stephenson, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and Tony Allen, president of the historically black Delaware State University.

September 6, 2020 at 10:21 pm #206375ALBKeymasterI remember too. Also that he stood for President once or twice. Just checked with Wikipedia and it was four times:
”Nader made four bids to become President of the United States, running with the Green Partyin 1996 and 2000 and as an independent in 2004 and 2008. In each campaign, Nader said he sought to highlight under-reported issues and a perceived need for electoral reform. He received nearly 3 million votes during his 2000 candidacy, but also stirred controversy over allegations that his campaign helped Republican candidate George W. Bush win a close election against Democratic candidate Al Gore.”.
He does not seem to be saying Vote Green this time.
