In a situation that we cannot even invite sufficient volunteers to fill our committees much less initiate worthwhile propaganda projects, i would be inclined not to be so disparaging of their efforts as YMS has.I do not consider the video to be poor quality but rather a limited success due to an understandable lack of collaboration and resources.Surely we should be encouraging rather than rebuking members for endeavouring to fill gaps in our online communication. I hope Vin learns from some of the criticisms he has had and re-edits his video or embarks upon a new venture. But i think the real issue is a reluctance by the EC to authorise a budget to spend on professionally produced videoes .

Literature (noun)* Written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit.* Books and writings published on a particular subject.* Leaflets and other printed matter used to advertise products or give advice. It's an open and shut case, M'lud, so in this case we can safely dispense with the views advanced by our learned resident Philadelphia lawyer…

The rule was drafted before any meaningful other media were available, so whilst a strict reading of "literature" is indeed the above, we have 40 or so years of the EC controlling non-written material (and also control of speakers). However, if we're looking at extant conference resolutions: "This Conference instructs the EC to extend and enlarge every avenue of propaganda, particularly the holding of a series of well-prepared indoor meetings in London and the Provinces" (1965)"That this Conference holds that in the best interests of the Party no further private advertisements by individual members using the name of the Party should be permitted until a thorough investigation into the implications for the reputation and effective democratic functioning of the Party has been made" (3, 1971) "That this Conference instructs the EC together with its appropriate subcommittees to make practical plans to be reported to the membership before or at ADM for the production of a Socialist Video Film" (1984)."This Conference recognizes the important need for our total propaganda effort, both locally and Party-wide, to be more streamlined and integrated; this to be accomplished by making the best use of available resources and within a framework of comprehensive, democratic forward planning –suitably varied and continuously adjustable– and including specific propaganda targets. The EC is therefore called upon to take all necessary steps to thoroughly investigate how this objective is to be achieved, with a view to Reports being prepared for 1987 A.DM and 1988 Conference" (1987).Conference has given the EC a broad remit to conrol propaganda of the partyu, and specifically to produce a video.

It's the year 2016. Quite simply it's time for the Party to bring this issue into the digital age.

That's expecting a great deal when we have members stuck in a time warp and questioning the rather obvious fact that an introductory video to the party is long overdue.  But no, they'd rather spend the party's time and energy conducting a port-mortem on Brexit.

If it's obvious perhaps you can explain why?  And Devon forfend the party actually discusses, you know, politics and the most significant political event in decades, that has serious implications for our organisation, for our propaganda and our theory.  And, oooh, the time and energy involved in reading and writing a few emails and having a discussion at a branch meeting.I'd agree a video would be nice, but it is not essential.

Many thanks for the historical perspective you have provided YMS,“…until a thorough investigation into the implications for the reputation and effective democratic functioning of the Party has been made" (1971)A “thorough investigation”…I question the review of Vin’s by the EC met this criterium of thorough.“That this Conference instructs the EC together with its appropriate subcommittees to make practical plans to be reported to the membership before or at ADM for the production of a Socialist Video Film" (1984).”Goodness me…30 years for this motion to have a result. Confirmation of the slowness of Party. Will it be 30 more years before we produce our next party-approved video? I wouldn't be at ll surprised when we have some members who actually question the need of an introductory video. But i'd be happy with another new election video than a more ambitious video film. “…The EC is therefore called upon to take all necessary steps to thoroughly investigate how this objective is to be achieved, with a view to Reports being prepared for 1987 A.DM and 1988 Conference" (1987)…”Perhaps you can retrieve and post these reports to ADM and Conference, YMS, so we can judge almost 30 years later whether these objectives have ever been achieved. I would suggest we are still struggling to accomplish those objectives…not just in A/V but with new pamphlets, too. The elephant in the room is that stack of cash which can finance well-made videoes by professionals and which isn't being spent on propaganda projects.

What is the situation with the video on the front page of this forum "Capitalism and other Kids Stuff"Anyone have the relevant EC resolution regarding this. Is it 'Official'?

    April 2005 Item 9.2(ii)

    Quote:
Lawrence & Scholey: "Regarding the video produced by some members, the EC is bound to point out that by not mentioning the Party's name or the word 'socialism', it raises the question of published policy that is beyond the remit of the EC. Therefore, the EC cannot officially endorse it. However, there is no problem in it being used as a link with the Party's website, and the EC hopes that the comrades concerned will continue their efforts to produce party videos which should have an important place in our general campaigning." Agreed: 7 for, 0 against, 1 abstention.

Just joined spintcom and found this as the most recent message Wasn't 'Capitalism and Other Kids Stuff' published online before the EC refused to endorse it in April 2005 Item 9.2(ii)? Following this, the producers were appointed (after self-nominating) to the video committee requesting a £5k budget, there were DVDs produced and sent to companion parties, multiple branch screenings, adverts in Socialist Standard ever since, the DVD is still available to order from the website and in fact the video appears on the front page. Is this how the rules on unauthorised videos are to be interpreted? Vin's budget  NIL
