You realise that they can't understand a North East English accent in America, don't you? Look what happened to Cheryl Cole. But good luck all the same.
Adam, Seeing we'll be attending the UK Chapter meeting I'm sure there wont be any problems with accents. Before I forget I've checked the date and its on the 19th not the 22nd. Adam if they are stuck for a guest speaker again OK if I suggest you give a talk on monetary reform?

November 14, 2012 at 9:58 pm #90728SocialistPunkParticipantHi OGW,I just couldn't resist that one.I have no idea if ALB was joking, but you know as well as I do that a north, south divide does exist and that we Northeners are often stereotypically believed to be thick and basic. But lets get back on to what this forum is meant to be about.
November 14, 2012 at 11:23 pm #90729OzymandiasParticipantI have never read an article in the Standard concerning regional accents and how they have impacted on the class divide. To me as a Glaswegian, listening to the entire myriad of different accents and inflections is always a musical delight for me. It's generally the earthiest accents which always interest me the most. The hundreds of different ways we proles talk in this island is a thing of beauty.
November 14, 2012 at 11:44 pm #90730steve colbornParticipantI remember going to conference in 1981 as a callow 19 year old. I got into a conversation with Dick Donnelly and Steve Coleman. Understood them both but after my little interjection Steve turned to Dick and said, "did you understand what he just said. Now Dick Donnellys accent is what I would consider "thick" Scottish but Steve understood Dick but not me! go figure. I thought it was hilarious but I thoroughly enjoyed both of their company. Those were the days. NE branch as was Islington branch were both going strong, wish those days would come back.Whatever happened to Steve and Dick, good comrades and Socialists without a doubt.

In the 19th century capitalists spoke with a regional accent. So, apparently, did the aristocracy. Here, for instance, is what the Dictionary of National Biography says via wikipedia about the 15th Earl of Derby (1826-1893) who was an MP and Cabinet Minister:
Quote:He lived much in his own county, spoke, like his father, with a Lancashire accentHis father, the 14th Earl, was three times Prime Minister in Victorian times. So the 14th Mr Wilson was not the first Prime Minister to speak with a northern accent.I'm not quite sure why we're discussing accents in a thread on Zeitgeist since, being in the Technocracy tradition, they probably think we should all speak like Stephen Hawking.

November 15, 2012 at 4:13 pm #90736AnonymousInactiveOFF-TOPIC NOTICEAn increasing number of recent posts on this thread have been off-topic. This thread is not about accents, Northerners, Southerners, Glaswegians, members past and present, Stephen Hawking or Daleks. It is specifically dedicated to Peter Joseph and TZM.If anyone wishes to start a new topic to cover any or all of the above subjects, or anything else for that matter, they are respectfully requested to do just that.Thank you.
November 15, 2012 at 5:27 pm #90737BrianParticipantThe main topic with TZM appears to be monetary reform: http://www.facebook.com/groups/147039565328926/ There are only so many questions I can bat, especially when they are coming in thick and fast.
November 15, 2012 at 5:34 pm #90738SocialistPunkParticipantHi moderator1,There is no escaping evolution. It gets everywhere. No wonder biblical creationists hate the idea. But seriously, I agree we should get this thread back on topic. So, I would like to ask, what is the hoped for outcome of joining TZM on their Team Speak forum? It is not meant as an antagonistic question. Merely a question to get this topic going again and to analyse our relationship with TZM.Do we hope to convert them or are we looking to build constructive bridges?I know I will be looking to build links with TZM, if possible, but I am not a party member.

Firstly, its to make that vital connection on the future society. Secondly, to snap up the opportunity to put the socialist case. Finally, its not a question of "converting" people but ensuring the facts speak for themselves in a logical and rational manner so that TZM supporter arrive at the conclusion our case for socialism is based on promoting self-emancipation for the class which counts. The general outcome which I'm seeking is to make socialists and not party members in particular. By its very nature this approach means "building constructive bridges" where all parties concerned participate in the design, construction and use of the bridge. It goes without saying if socialists are looking for an opportunity to have a friendly chat with their fellow workers the place to be is TS 3.
