JD Wetherspoon’s boss, Tim Martin, has pledged to slash the price of lagers, spirits, wine and cider if the UK leaves the EU, after shaving 20p off a pint of ale to illustrate the Brexit benefits.
Martin has been one of the most vociferously pro-Brexit figures in the world of business, repeatedly insisting that leaving the European Union, even without a deal, will mean cheaper prices for customers.

Seems like a case of free advertising for a political cause combined with a case of free advertising for a commercial venture. A cynical exercise which we can take with a pinch of salt
If Martin is genuine in his claim in wanting to shave 20p off a pint of ale “to illustrate the Brexit benefits” what’s to him doing the same thing now?
September 7, 2019 at 2:50 pm #190122alanjjohnstoneKeymasterThe link says he has already cut the price of Ruddles, an ale made by Greene King, by an average of 20p across its 900 pubs.
September 8, 2019 at 5:05 pm #190135ALBKeymasterIs this (put forward here by a SDLP politician) the face-saving formula for Johnson — a customs border down the Irish Sea leaving Northern Ireland in the EU customs union and frictionless single market, perhaps endorsed by a referendum in Northern Ireland? After all, having thrown away its majority, the regime is no longer so dependent on the DUP and can dump them.
Incidentally, this is what the EU originally proposed (without the referendum). It was the May government that changed it to apply to the whole of the UK. But that was when they still needed DUP votes and went around with hand on their heart saying how dear to them was the union of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
September 9, 2019 at 1:19 pm #190152Bijou DrainsParticipantI was talking to a small businessman from Northern Ireland last week and for him this was the dream solution, as part of the UK they would have access to all (if any) trade deals that the UK have as well as having free access to the UK, they would also in effect be part of the EU for trade purposes. It would make Northern Ireland a very attractive part of the world to set up manufacturing plants in.
September 10, 2019 at 3:05 pm #190181ALBKeymasterJust received a personalised letter from “Jo Swinson MP Leader of the Liberal Democrats” (don’t know how I got on their mailing this, perhaps because I once complained to a LibDem councillor about a 20 mph speed limit and bumps on a main road). She makes the following promise:
“If we stop Brexit, then we can build an economy that works for everyone, so families aren’t forced to rely on foodbanks. We can make tackling the climate emergency a priority for our government. We can start investing in our schools so that every child has the best start in life.”
Oh yes. If not being in the EU would prevent this, why couldn’t “we” have done these things during the forty odd years when Britain remained a member?

Anybody know the cost of buying that software for ourselves to make our own spoof videos?

Not surprised by the political careerist trajectory of this person

September 15, 2019 at 8:45 am #190253ALBKeymasterThat’s a coincidence as North London branch report that yesterday, when they set up their stall at their usual place in Holloway Road, they found that the Brexit Party were already there — together with their candidate, James Heartfield. But what a disappointment the author of the excellent Unpatriotic History of the Second World War has turned out to be. Although he didn’t agree with us, he was sympathetic enough to sign our nomination papers at one local election and presumably voted for us. His talk on his book that he gave at Head Office is on this site here:

Rather ironic that he should now be the standard-bearer for an ultra-patriotic British party full of nostalgia for the Dunkirk spirit.
September 16, 2019 at 7:21 am #190272ALBKeymasterI see the Liberals voted yesterday to drop the word “Democratic” from their title when they voted that MPs should vote to ignore the result of a democratically-held referendum without a mandate from a further referendum.
Meanwhile, Labour’s position is even more ridiculous. They want to negotiate a deal and put it to the people telling them to vote against it.
The farce continues.
