Surprisingly Cuba has never ever had animal welfare laws. But it is soon to change.

The quota for state’s whole wolf hunting season had been at 119 wolves. Eighty-one other permits were set aside for Ojibwe tribes.

The RSPCA said the boom in pet ownership could turn into a “crisis” for those animals once their owners returned to work after lockdown.
March 23, 2021 at 11:18 pm #215910alanjjohnstoneKeymasterGood news
The fast growth of plant-based alternatives to animal products could mean Europe and North America will reach “peak meat” by 2025, at which point consumption of conventional meat starts to fall, according to a report.
The study also forecasts that plant-based meats will match regular meat on price by 2023 and that nine out of 10 of the world’s favourite dishes will have realistic alternatives by 2035.

March 26, 2021 at 12:27 pm #216071alanjjohnstoneKeymasterThe US pet industry generated $103.6 billion in annual sales, the industry’s highest figure to date.
$42 billion was spent on pet food and treats, representing a 9.7% increase from 2019. Another $22.1 billion was spent on supplies, live animals and over-the-counter medication, a 15.1% increase from 2019. Vet care and product sales also increased 7.2% to $31.4 billion.
American pets get more to eat and better health care than many of the worlds people.
The pet industry play pet-owners for fools.

March 27, 2021 at 8:25 pm #216182alanjjohnstoneKeymasterYou raised a very important point
And we also have the pandemic which left not only mariners stranded at sea but at least one ship carrying cattle
Brexit too has also had its effect on the export of live animals and increased delays and therefore suffering and discomfort for the animals
March 27, 2021 at 10:12 pm #216194alanjjohnstoneKeymasterTens of thousands of horses are being subjected to long-haul flights, confined in crates with no food or water, to meet demand for horsemeat in Japan.
Since 2013, about 40,000 live horses have been flown to Japan from airports in western Canada. Under Canadian regulations, the journey can stretch up to 28 hours, during which the animals are allowed to go without food, water or rest.
March 29, 2021 at 12:25 am #216235alanjjohnstoneKeymasterAgain to highlight your earlier post, Animals International announced that thousands of animals — mostly sheep on 13 vessels from Romania — were at risk of dying if the channel did not reopen in the “next 24 hours,” forecasting that delayed livestock carriers could run out of water and fodder.

“We are sitting in front of a major tragedy”
At both ends or headed for Suez were at least 20 such carriers, the Guardian reported. Animals International urged nations to call their respective livestock ships back. On Thursday, Spain had given orders that no animal ships bound for Saudi Arabia and Jordan be loaded.

The Scottish SPCA says its animal shelters across Scotland have hit capacity.
The charity recorded a dramatic increase in the number of calls to its helpline about unwanted animals, with more than 136,000 calls received in 2020.
“In many cases, neglect is not deliberate. Even people who love their animals can find themselves in a position where they are unable to continue to provide them with the care they need.”
And of course there are the mercenary aspiring capitalists. A rise in demand for puppies also led to an increase in the number of raids and seizures of dogs from low-welfare puppy farms and dealers.
