Additionally the German Empire established universal male suffrage in 1871. So all German soldiers in WW1 had the vote, whereas all British soldiers did not. The proportion of British soldiers who had the vote would probably have been far less than the 66% quoted by Adam, as the proportion of soldiers who were heads of households would have been much smaller due to their relative youth. So much for “fighting for the cause of freedom”

From today’s Times confirmation as to why we should discourage the use of the term “white privilege”. Didn’t those who bandy it about realise that it was inevitably going to put to this use?

“Elsewhere falsified leaflets proclaiming that Labour ‘believes it is high time white people acknowledged their privilege and gave something to people of colour’ have been posted in mainly white areas.”

The paper went on to blame supporters of Galloway. I doubt that. There are other ant-Labour candidates standing. It could even be the Tories. Remember Smethwuck and the “if you want a nigger for a neighbour, vote Labour” leaflets? Politics is a dirty business.

Thanks, Adam, for the helpful information regarding why the SPGB didn’t advocate universal suffrage in the early 20th century.

I recommend starting a new topic for the Batley & Spen by-election.

(Pleasantly?) surprised to see that Labour actually won Batley & Spen! Seems like Galloway’s attempt to be a spoiler candidate almost succeeded, though.

Yes, Galloway’s “Workers Party” got 8,264 votes, or 22% of the votes cast. No doubt nearly all of them will have been from former Labour-voting Muslims dissatisfied with Starmer’s strident pro-Zionist stance.

The Workers Party, so- called, has strong link with the “Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist)” which is a party that supports Stalin, Mao, Enver Hodja, Kim Il Sung, etc. But I don’t suppose they are under any illusion that the votes cast for Galloway were votes for their programme for national(ist) state capitalism in Britain. Here’s what they stand for from their own site.

I don’t suppose either that Galloway even mentioned the word socialism (or even capitalism) in his campaign. I hope not. But does anyone know?

Galloway is contesting the legality of the election outcome. The removal of his posters by the council and Leadbeater accusing him of laughing at her being harassed.

    A case of sour grapes?

I haven’t had much insight into Galloway’s antics on the campaign trail since he blocked me on Twitter, but I believe his was a very identity politics based campaign. Somehow I doubt Galloway’s alignment with the tankiest of Stalinists would be a vote winner if it was common knowledge…

Here is a video of him campaigning. I see from their site that his party does claim to be socialist. It looks like the Respect Party resuscitated.

The Alliance for Green Socialism won 104 votes in B & S. I checked them out the other day, and they appear to be a cross between the Green Party and the Socialist Party (England & Wales); in that they are very reformist; believe in zero-growth capitalism (what an oxymoron!); and they want to nationalise big businesses.

Anila Baig in the Daily Mirror also slates George Galloway. “Voters saw off divisive George”. Going back to when he won Bethnal Green and Bow and his R.E.S.P.E.C.T Party which attracted the Muslim vote because of its anti Iraqi war, position.

Baig: “where he also swept to victory – and then swept out again like rubbish”*.

*Those who voted RESPECT, largely Bethnal Green and Bow constituents who are Muslims, and the Muslims majority elected on the Council, didn’t “respect” George Galloway party’s position on support for Gay Rights.

The majority on Newham Council *

The Respect Party after local elections, took control of Newham Council, because of its anti Iraq stance. A statement issued by Respect nationally, supporting Gay Rights, saw Respect Party Newham Council members who held a meeting, which took the decision to resign from Respect, en masse, over its support for Gay Rights.
The Respect Party was effectively killed off.

Regardless of my personal view, GG has been subject to the usual media smearing but he is well accustomed to it and gets enough publicity out of it

GG has been particularly anti-‘woke’ on various identity politics on sex-education and transgender.

Other than Palestine and Keir Starmer’s leadership (the latter being foremost) he has been more bread-and-butter on pot-holes and run-down buildings.
