The US has supported India’s right to “self defence” against cross-border terrorism after an attack claimed by Pakistan-based militants killed at least 44 police officers in the disputed territory of Kashmir.

US national security advisor John Bolton reportedly told his counterpart in Delhi, that America “offered all assistance to India” to bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

India on Friday claimed it had “incontrovertible evidence” Pakistan had a “direct hand” in the attack.

Pakistan has denied it had any role in Thursday’s attack and accused India of pointing the finger of blame without conducting a proper investigation.

Also a war for water about to break out?

India’s infrastructure minister, Nitin Gadkari, announced that his country had “decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan.”

Water usage rights in the region are covered by the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which gives India control over the eastern Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers; and Pakistan control of the western Indus, Jhelum and Chenab.

I’m somewhat surprised how the India changing the status of Kashmir is not making more headlines than it is.

Two nuclear armed nations possibly confronting one another over the issue and already having had outright wars and ongoing armed conflicts is submerged to the inside pages rather than being the lead news item.

Perhaps the answer lies in the increasing trade and other links being developed between Iran and Pakistan. Historically there have been quite close ties, Iran was the first country to recognise Pakistani sovereignty. There is talk of a Iran – Pakistan – China pipeline. There is a free trade agreement between Pakistan and Iran, Iran has pronounced its support for Pakistan over Kashmir, etc.

It seems like the world is solidifying even further into two opposing trading blocks, backed by their military strength. India at the moment appears to be courting the block that includes the US, Saudi Arabia, etc. whereas Pakistan appears to be heading more in the direction of the Russia, China, Iran camp. It’s just like the Krays and the Richardsons really, just teh Krays and the Richardsons had more compassion, humanity and regard for human life.

I haven’t had a chance to see much on RT, but I would bet they are playing up the dispute for their masters int eh same way as the Western media are paying it down for theirs

In Pakistan’s parliament on Tuesday, the prime minister, Imran Khan, said he would raise the issue with the UN, adding: “I am afraid that [India] will now carry out ethnic cleansing in Kashmir. They will try to remove the local people and bring in others and make them a majority, so that the locals become nothing but slaves.”

Many associate this with the Israeli settlements in the West Bank but may be more similar to China’s policy in Tibet and Xinjiang

Can Kashmir be seen in isolation to the anti-muslim trend in India by the right-wing Hindutva movement.

    Just posted on the blog

The blog has previously posted on the campaign in Assam,  home to tens of thousands of people from muslim Bangladesh, to make those who cannot prove they are Indian stateless.

Although exchanges of fire is a regular occurrence at this moment in time such incidents can be very risky and easily escalate

At least 4,000 people were arrested in Indian-administered Kashmir and held under the Public Safety Act (PSA), a controversial law that allows authorities to imprison someone for up to two years without charge or trial. Most of them were flown out of Kashmir because prisons here have run out of capacity.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said while India had strictly adhered to the nuclear weapons doctrine of “no first use” policy, what would happen in the future will depend on circumstances.
