Mothers with babies and teenagers studying for exams are amoung the protestors at Carnegie Library
Children, mothers with babies and pensioners have been among protestors occupying a library since it was due to close on Thursday.
A group of around 40 people are living in Carnegie Library in Loughborough Junction, south London, as part of a campaign to keep it open.[/.quote]
The council say it will re-open as a GYm and library, but protestors point out that the library will be unstaffed/volunteer run without professional librarians.
Loughborough Junction really is in deep Lambeth, and the Carnegie Library was a gift from the philanthropist of the same name (so a historic building, probably a great money sink).
Notably, this is a Labour council, and I sympathise with their unpalatable choices, but still, good to see a community fightback.
