I dont know if anyone else has tried this but there are a lot of free ebooks to be had.

Go to Amazon and search for Free eBooks (topic) eg philosophy.

A lot are old classics  by Marx, Hobbes, Kant etc but they are free and have been formatted for the Kindle reader.

I've been subscribed free to http://www.free-ebooks.net/  for a few months, but have only read 1 of their books.btw I noticed Gutenberg  was missing Das Capital. I'm suspecting they are selective in what they produce.

There is also an invaluable function on Wikipedia to produce ebooks.  Or download as a PDF.
