October 11, 2015 at 7:59 pm #84181Socialist Party Head OfficeParticipantDear ComradesMy mother Ivy Alexander nee Hicks, died recently. She was a member of the SPGB in the late 1940s and into the early 1950s; part of the Tony Turner generation. Although she dropped out of activity after she had kids, she retained the party’s politics, spoiling her ballot in elections for instance. I have included her death notice below and as an attachment. Would it be possible for you to circulate to old-timers in the organisation? Mum was an East Ender and clearly very attractive and lively, so she might be remembered by a few of them. Also she wrote an autobiography (see below), part of which is recollections, happy ones, of being in the party. We are putting together a list of music to play at the funeral. Is there anything you can suggest? is there an anthem that is is commonly sung at SPGB events?Fraternally,Peter Alexander
IVY ALEXANDER
Ivy Joan Alexander neé Hicks, born in 1924, died suddenly on 26 September 2015 aged 91.
Ivy’s husband, John, to whom she was married for 63 years, died only seven weeks before her. She is survived by three children, John, Clare and Peter, by three grand-children and by a great grand-daughter born just 11 days before her death.
Ivy wrote about her childhood and early adult years in an autobiography entitled Maid in West Ham. After graduating from Southampton University she became a schoolteacher; first in south London, then north Hertfordshire, and finally in south Hampshire. In retirement Ivy was membership secretary of the Winchester Ramblers. Six years ago she and John moved to Swyre, Dorset, where they could be closer to John and Clare. She became a socialist in her teens and remained one throughout her life.
All who knew Ivy are invited to attend her funeral, which will be held at Weymouth Crematorium on Friday 23 October starting at 12.00.
No flowers please. Messages, which are much appreciated, can be sent to Co-operative Funeralcare, 130 Abbotsbury Road, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 0JS. Dress optional, but cheerful colours preferred.
