Who do Facebook think they are? Answer: they are the private owners of their platform and are just exercising their private property rights.

It’s bad enough states imposing censorship but private corporations with not even a pretence of democratic control or accountability. First they go for Trump and Ayatollah Khomeni or whoever is the big cheese there now, then they can come for anybody else.

I bet ex-LibDem leader and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg has a hand in this. Some liberal ! He needs to re-read John Stuart Mill.

They might if they notice the plandemic and anti-vaxxer stuff appearing on it, even if this is vigorously refuted by others. Which of course is the way to deal with mistaken views —- refute them not prevent them being expressed.

Mind you, from that point of view, the SWP have been hoist by their own petard as they are all in favour of no-platformimg selected opponents of theirs.

Perhaps mark Zuckerberg has been brushing up on his Lenin, as Valdimir said “Why should freedom of speech and freedom of press be allowed? Why should a government which is doing what it believes to be right allow itself to be criticized? It would not allow opposition by lethal weapons. Ideas are much more fatal things than guns. Why should any man be allowed to buy a printing press and disseminate pernicious opinions calculated to embarrass the government?

They have only banned the Trotskyists tendencies, but they have not banned the RCPUSA, the CPUSA, the SPGB, WSPUSA, SLPA, CCI, and many others

Classic socialist statement against suppression of opinion, even anti-democratic opinion, in this editorial from February 1941 on the government’s decision to ban the Daily Worker:

Many of us have been warning that the fall-out over the Capitol riot would spill-over on to the left-wing’s freedoms to protest.

We see here that the campaign to de-platform the Right on social media poses a threat to all political activists.

Yet again the ‘liberal’s’ self-righteous indignation leads them cutting their own throat.

Once more our ‘rights’ and ‘liberties’ are merely at the convenience and the whim of those who hold the real power.

Again, shame we do not have an effective media committee to issue a press statement to take advantage of this event. The blog will have to be an unsatisfactory substitute with a post, based on this thread.

You should be posting that observation to the party lists for action or a response to it.

    A response on our blog

    https://socialismoryourmoneyback.blogspot.com/2021/01/freedom-of-speech-belongs-to-whoever.html

Matt, recriminations about our ineffective committees has been raised many times before in all the appropriate places and until our circumstances change such short-comings will sadly persist. I mentioned it here to remind forum contributors of the blog’s availability, which too often is over-looked and not linked to as often as it should be.

In the wake of the attack on the Capitol, Hillary Clinton called for “new criminal laws at the state and federal levels that hold white supremacists accountable and tracking the activities of extremists such as those who breached the Capitol”.

    However,

“…to expand the government’s national security powers once again at the expense of the human civil rights of the American people would only serve to further undermine our democracy, not protect it,” Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said.

I still think it is uncharacteristic of you, if not decidedly uncomradely, to not allow a newly appointed committee of volunteers, to respond, so I have placed it on our lists for a response.

To hazard a guess I think it most likely the SWP temporarily fell foul of an algorithm, because of their anti covid stuff. That’s how Facebook works, it’s mostly robots doing things, not humans. TBH I think they’re trying to make a drama out of this to gain publicity and support.

But do you really think that being kicked off Facebook is the same thing as government censorship? Surely freedom of the press also involves the freedom of a press to decide what it does not wish to publish?

If anything it shows the importance of not over-relying on private or corporate platforms that might not share our agenda.

Are the SWP covidiots as well as Trotskidiots then?
    I didn’t know that.

I didn’t have the stomach to look, so could be wrong, but the original article has a quote from them saying that they regularly post “against Boris Johnson’s Covid policies”
