Just two illustrations from the Project Officer (see December 2013 EC minutes) showing what might be done with the currently four blanks panels below possible new fascia designs, a decision about which has still to be reached by the Ad Hoc committee appointed by the EC last June.

Gotta say I wasn't a big fan of the red and black before but that one looks good.

FWIW I prefer the plain wood panels. Like the big round sticker in the window though.

I still want a flag pole sticking out with a red flag, or a hanging sign from the existing bracket.(even if it does mean seeking council approval) But on the two examples shown i favour the lay-out  and the colour scheme of the second but MINUS the window WSM logo. A smaller version of that can go in the window pane above the door, under the B

Here are six more fascia designs by comrade Mandy Bruce submitted to the January 2014 EC on her behalf by the Project Officer.  These are in addition to those presented to the December 2013 EC and now brings to 33 the total number of designs provided so far, most of which appear to have been rejected by the Ad Hoc Committee appointed last June to make a decision.Amazingly, it is now 3 1/2 years since the new shop front was installed and roughly the same time that discussion has been taking place about what kind and design of fascia signage the membership would like to see… Designs E & FDesigns G & HDesigns I & J

Whatever their merits these new designs are out of order as they contravene a 1988 Conference Resolution on the matter:

    Quote:
This Conference resolves that the Party's full name 'The Socialist Party of Great Britain', be used in the following cases:(a) Legal documents, Forms A to G, membership cards.(b) The World Socialist Movement listing box, The World Socialist Movement publications box, the 'Address of the Party box on the inside page of the Socialist Standard giving details of EC Meetings, etc.'The Socialist Party' to be used in the following cases:(1) On the covers of the Socialist Standard, pamphlets and leaflets.(2) Generally in the texts of articles and pamphlets.(3) On all occasions where the address of Head Office is given, e.g. headed notepaper, adverts for socialist material, etc., except in (b) above.(4) All advertising and publicity material, posters, media adverts, etc.(5) In the titles of meetings and debates, and as the organiser of them.(6) Generally by speakers at indoor and outdoor meetings.(7) Manifestoes, election addresses, etc.(8) On the Head Office shop front fascia.

It is why the present fascia says "THE SOCIALIST PARTY" and has done since then.

And what if we side-step that rule by using "World Socialist Movement (Socialist Party of Great Britain)" on the facia? The rule doesn't cover additional titles on the facia by saying these are forbidden so "SPGB" can be added and used, IMHO

That would be undemocratic and go against the whole spirit of the 1988 resolution one of whose aims was to try to introduce some comsistency into what we call ourselves. To promote one instead of randomly using three (The Socialist Party of Great Britain, SPGB, The Socialist Party). To use two different versions on the front of our office would be silly anyway and, don't forget, that SPGB is the preferred name of our opponents as a way of avoiding calling us "The Socialist Party" which we are in this country. In a subsequent Party Poll in 1991 that

    Quote:
members and branches be required to abide strictly by the terms of the 1988 Conference resolution

    was carried and that

    Quote:
members and branches revert to the previous practice of using the full or shortened version of the Party's name at their own discretion.

was rejected. For defying it in this sort of way most of the members of two branches were expelled by another Party Poll. So, beware of re-igniting the Party name controversy. After all, we are only talking about our image in one street in south London. Nobody in most of London, let alone rest of the country, is affected. It's not that important and not worth falling out over.  Let sleeping dogs lie.

The aesthetic argument is also that just putting 'The Socialist Party' on the fascia is simple and striking. How many other high street fascias contain more than three words to identify their business?

Okay but I meant fascias of instantly recognisable high street brands not local small businesses with a cornershop.

It is why the present fascia says "THE SOCIALIST PARTY" and has done since then.

But that wasn't the end of the story. In 2008 the following Conference Resolution, with amendment, was carried:

    Quote:
“This Conference resolves that the Party's full name, 'The Socialist Party of Great Britain', be used in the following cases:A. legal documents; B. Party forms; C. Party membership cards; D. publication credits, including the masthead of the Socialist Standard; E. listings of World Socialist Movement parties and publications; and F. the title of the Party's website. It is encouraged to use the abbreviated form 'The Socialist Party' in any other context where confusion with other similarly named organisations is unlikely. This resolution supersedes the 1986 and 1988 Conference resolutions respecting the use of the Party's names."  (emphasis added)Amendment to motion 13: “After 'C.', insert new paragraph: ‘D. All Party bank accounts.’ and re-letter subsequent paragraphs.” Vote 17 on the amendment For 80 Against 20 Vote 18 if the amendment is carried For 73 Against 25 Vote 19 on the unamended motion For 59 Against 36Motion as amended CARRIED

No outright prohibition then in using the full name on the Head Office fascia.

If the argument that leaving it as 'The Socialist Party' is that it is likely to cause confusion with "other similarily named organisations", i.e in practice the ex-Miltant mob, then this would be an argument for never using 'The Socialist Party' and let Militant get away with stealing a name we have used since 1904.There is also a constitutional question since the 1988 resolution was endorsed by a Party Poll, as Rule 26 specifies:

    Quote:
The result of a Party Poll shall overrule all other decisions (i.e., EC, Conference or previous Party Poll decisions)

i.e. a Conference Resolution cannot overrule a Party Poll. So it is open to question whether, despite its wording, the 2008 Conference resolution really did supersede the 1988 resolution. As I said, far better to let sleeping dogs lie.

As Project Officer appointed by the EC to oversee the implementation of the new Head Office fascia sign I am pleased to inform comrades that the Ad-Hoc Head Office Fascia Committee met on Saturday 1st February 2014 and will be presenting its final report to the March 2014 Executive Committee as shown below:"We have agreed Design 'E' (the first of two images displayed at http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/forum/world-socialist-movement/designs-proposed-new-head-office-signage?page=1#comment-11252) submitted by comrade Mandy Bruce to the January 2014 Executive Committee, with the following specifications, including variations to that design. The new fascia will replace the current fascia in the same place or location, e.g. height, elevation, width etc.Panels are outside of our remit. The windows are outside of our remit. It will not include the word '1904'.It will not include the website address. It will not include the phone number. It will not include a logo.It will not include a scroll. The background will be a solid colour not a design. The background colour will be red.The wording used will be 'The Socialist Party SPGB' and will not include 'Of Great Britain' (subject to standing orders). The case of the wording of 'The Socialist Party' will be mixed upper and lower case as indicated, and the wording of 'SPGB' will be all capitals. The wording will be on one line (not on two lines or more) and overlap as designed on design 'E' submitted. The font colour of the wording of 'The Socialist Party' will be white and the font colour of the wording 'SPGB' will be black. The wording 'SPGB' will not be dotted or written as initials or enclosed in brackets. We did not specify a font typeface but agreed a plain font typeface similar to the design 'E' submitted, in preference to a fancy font typeface. The font size of the wording 'The Socialist Party' will be larger than on the design 'E' submitted. The font size of the wording 'SPGB' will be a similar or the same size as on the design 'E' submitted.Unless there are any further comments or questions, this completes the work of the Fascia Committee and the Executive Committee can forward the report to the Project Officer."

To have "The Socialist Party SPGB" on the fascia would be worse than having "The Socialist Party of Great Britain." While a case can be made out for the latter there is no resolution that can justify the former which is just plain silly. Either we use one name or the other, not two at the same time.A compromise (for those who want to surrender the name "Socialist Party" to the Trots and  distinguish us from them instead of contesting their right to usurp a name we've used for decades)  would be have to THE SOCIALIST PARTY on one line in big letters with "of Great Britain" in (much) smaller size on a line beneath it. Or you could put our email or website address which includes the acronym "spgb".But I don't think we are ever going to agree on this. But we don't need to. We could simply leave things as they are.
