The debate will explore the opposing ideas of an independent UK, or a socialist world. There has been much media excitement following the announcement by the BBC of a televised debate between Nick Clegg (Liberal Democrats) and Nigel Farage (UKIP) on Britain's future in Europe. James Harding, Director of BBC News and Current Affairs, said: "We are delighted to have negotiated successfully to broadcast this important debate. Europe is always a highly charged issue in British politics and this is a fantastic opportunity to test the arguments." However, a debate that focuses on whether Britain remains in, or out, of Europe means nothing to the vast majority of people in Britain. A more pertinent debate will take place between Bill Martin of the Socialist Party, and Elizabeth Jones, No.3 on the UKIP list standing for the London region in the Euroelections in May. The debate will question whether the UK should isolate itself from Europe and continue to operate a system based on production for profit, making a very small minority very rich whilst exploiting the majority, or whether society needs to be transformed into a global socialist society, with production for use to satisfy the needs of all people.Admission to the debate will be free, and refreshments will be available. The audience will be invited to participate in the debate."ENDShttps://www.facebook.com/groups/452978678163276/
March 11, 2014 at 8:56 am #100496ALBKeymasterWe've also run off 3000 leaflets as part of our local election campaign for the Lambeth Council in May, advertising the debate prominently on the back. Door-to-door distribution in the wards round Head Office begins this week.In the meantime here's Nigel Farage's bid for the votes of "the working classes":http://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/nigel-farage-the-main-parties-dont-listen-to-the-working-classes-9181460.htmlMaybe Elizabeth Jones will turn up in a shawl and clogs.
March 11, 2014 at 9:19 am #100497jondwhiteParticipantHas the more pertinent debate generated more media excitement? Any newspaper (Guardian – John Harris videos), press (New Statesman podcast, Total Politics), radio (Resonance FM) or television (Russia Today) been approached?
March 11, 2014 at 9:23 am #100498alanjjohnstoneKeymasterI would also be interested in knowing the list of media outlets, the list of individual journalists and the list of other organisations sent this release by the Media Committee.Perhaps a private e-mail to myself would be more advisable if the list is a lengthy one.

March 14, 2014 at 12:43 am #100493robbo203ParticipantThis debate has stirred up a shit storm over on Revleft http://www.revleft.com/vb/spgb-vs-ukip-t187406/index.html?t=187406 Ive taken the "no platform" brigade to task but where are members of the SPGB in this debate? The silence seems a little odd when such an important principle is involved
March 14, 2014 at 2:22 am #100501ALBKeymasterI see you are winning the argument with others joining in to support you, but isn't the Idler a Party member?I wonder what these assorted leftists would say if we were debating with No2EU (who, incidentally, we should try to debate before they disappear after Bob Crow's funeral) who are appealing to the same prejudice. And if they think that UKIP is any sort of threat in the area (Clapham and Brixton) they should look at recent local by-election results there, where both us and Elizabeth Jones have stood:http://moderngov.lambeth.gov.uk/mgElectionAreaResults.aspx?ID=103&RPID=23950518http://moderngov.lambeth.gov.uk/mgElectionAreaResults.aspx?ID=106&RPID=23950506http://moderngov.lambeth.gov.uk/mgElectionAreaResults.aspx?ID=105&RPID=23950512In the Euroelections we'll be taking on Nigel Farage himself as he's one of the MEPs for the South East region where we'll be standing too. .
March 14, 2014 at 1:27 pm #100502alanjjohnstoneKeymasterJust read the thread on Rev Left…i say No Platform for any apologists of the suppression of the Kronstadt Commune !! As it is, i have had a reply to my letter on immigration in this week's WW, which is summed up as darn all those selfish foreigners coming to our country, calling us lazy and stealing our jobs…we got to protect our own communities, first and foremost…. I have, of course replied. but not my best letter since i was being pestered for school pocket-money at the time. Perhaps i should have chided CPGB for permitting anti-immigrant proponents a platform but left nationalists get a bye , it seems as Adam points out with NO2EUhttp://www.cpgb.org.uk/home/weekly-worker/1001/letters
March 14, 2014 at 1:38 pm #100503jondwhiteParticipantCPGB-PCC don't support 'the principle of no platform' (except in certain rare circumstances as a tactic) hence why they printed a letter from a self-proclaimed fascist a few weeks ago. It's mainly Trots and Bakuninists harping on about 'no platform' because they've got nothing else to say or do.
March 15, 2014 at 7:06 pm #100504robbo203ParticipantIt looks like you are gonna have some people from the Kurdish PKK turning up at the debate!http://www.revleft.com/vb/spgb-vs-ukip-t187406/index.html?p=2730732#post2730732
March 15, 2014 at 8:08 pm #100505ALBKeymasterI see what you mean:http://www.revleft.com/vb/showpost.php?p=2730577&postcount=75Should be interesting to compare the two nationalisms with us in the middle opposing both.
March 17, 2014 at 2:13 am #100506twcParticipantExcellent, robbo.
