“Pity that depending on their handouts is seen as the only game in town.”

Died of bronchopneumonia though…
Wonder if Lizzie45 knows the reformist rallying song, Talking Heads ‘Road to Nowhere’.October 29, 2022 at 5:24 pm #235189Lizzie45Blocked“Wonder if Lizzie45 knows the reformist rallying song, Talking Heads âRoad to Nowhereâ.”
Yes, of course.
It’s about nothingness, to be sure, but it’s also about trying to make the world a better place, even though the kind of world being suggested is ultimately unattainable.
“I wanted to write a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom”, David Byrne is reported to have said.
Utopia is the destination Byrne is referring to in ‘Road to Nowhere’. “There’s a city in my mind,” “it’s very far away,” etc. He’s describing a future that cannot exist.

October 30, 2022 at 11:44 pm #235300AnonymousInactiveThe State California has given direct bank deposits and checks in several occasions to the whole population of the working class, to combat unemployment, inflation, high cost of living, pandemic crisis, and capitalism has continued its habitual logic: More poor workers, more unemployments, more homeless and more crisis. Capitalism beauty parlor is not working, this system can not be reformed to benefits the great majority of the workers, on the contrary, the great majority of workers must replace it for a post capitalist society

These two energy companies made more than ÂŁ15 billion in combined profit between July and September this year.
In the last 12 months, their profits have doubled â and so have our energy bills. This is whatâs fuelling the âcost of living crisisâ: we pay, they profit.
Itâs a crisis of unchecked profiteering and greed.

November 3, 2022 at 12:19 am #235527alanjjohnstoneKeymasterSNPâs finance secretary has announced a further ÂŁ615m of cuts to healthcare, education and the justice system in Scotland.
When added to previously announced cuts of ÂŁ560m it is almost ÂŁ1.2bn in austerity cuts
November 3, 2022 at 11:47 am #235552ALBKeymasterThe shape of things to come even if the whole of Britain gets a Labour government. Theyâll be forced to make cuts just like the Tartan reformists in office in Edinburgh are.
In the end reformists governments canât be any different from conservative ones â because they both accept the capitalist economic system and have to work within its constraints. They can only act as caretakers for capitalism.
November 3, 2022 at 2:24 pm #235560ALBKeymasterGot my increased winter heating allowance of ÂŁ250 and interest rates on savings are going up to 3%. Lizzie must be right that capitalism is the best game into town.

Didn’t say it was the best game in town, simply the only one – at least for the foreseeable future.

November 3, 2022 at 3:21 pm #235567ALBKeymasterThatâs not logical. To say something is the âonlyâ game in town is higher praise than saying it is the âbestâ game in town as this suggests that there are at least two other games about. No?
November 3, 2022 at 6:51 pm #235591Lizzie45BlockedNo?
No, don’t accept the premise. “Praise” doesn’t enter into it. Capitalism, like it or not, and for all its perceived imperfections, is the only extant and viable game currently in town.
Patently obvious.
November 3, 2022 at 7:19 pm #235592ALBKeymasterWell, in my book saying that capitalism is âviableâ, ie works successfully, is praise. That it is extant is of course an in incontrovertible fact. So is that it can never be made to work in the interest of the majority class of wage workers and their dependents.
