An interesting article on the USA attempts to encircle China with the pursuit of Vietnam as a potential military partner against China

April 21, 2021 at 11:08 am #217112alanjjohnstoneKeymasterPhilippines has ramped up its rhetoric in recent weeks in defiance of what it says is threatening behaviour by Chinese vessels. Duterte has ordered authorities to continue “sovereignty patrols”, and intensify operations against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in its territorial waters, the task force said.

The federal government used new powers to rip up two deals made between the state of Victoria and China, backing away from the agreements to protect Australia’s national interest.

April 24, 2021 at 1:23 am #217181alanjjohnstoneKeymasterJapan will hold a joint military drill with US and French troops in the country’s southwest next month, the defence minister has announced, as China’s actions in regional waters raise concern.
The exercise, running from May 11 to 17, will be the first large-scale exercise in Japan involving ground troops from all three countries.

April 26, 2021 at 3:30 am #217251alanjjohnstoneKeymasterAircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth departs for its first operational deployment with eight RAF F35B stealth fighter jets on board, will depart for Asia accompanied by six Royal Navy ships, a submarine, 14 naval helicopters and a company of Royal Marines. A squadron of 10 US Marine Corps F35B Lightning II jets will also be embarked on the carrier in what the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is describing as the “largest concentration of maritime and air power to leave the UK in a generation”.
The Carrier Strike Group (CSG), which will carry out visits to India, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, will include the US destroyer USS The Sullivans and the Dutch frigate HNLMS Evertsen.
April 26, 2021 at 12:53 pm #217259alanjjohnstoneKeymasterBBC’s Newsnight is back to its war mongering ways with an interview supposedly about climate change but its focus is primarily with China’s human rights abuses.
We have been here before with the BBC. Iraq was all about “Saddam gassed his own people” to justify war.
And how easy it is to forget America’s illegal imprisonment of Uyghurs in Guantanamo Bay as terrorists.
It does seem as if many in the West are determined to use the Uyghur persecution as pawns.
I wonder how the US would respond if a Chinese war fleet arrived off the coast of California or the UK if the Chinese sailed its aircraft carriers up and down the English Channel.

One of Australia’s most senior security officials has said liberal democracies must brace for war amid elevated global tensions. Home Affairs Department Secretary Mike Pezzullo said the possibility of war was increasing.
And beefs up its military
Australia will spend A$747 million ($580 million) to upgrade four military bases in its north and expand war games with the United States, Prime Minister Scott Morrison will say on Wednesday. An airstrip in the Northern Territory will be lengthened to support larger aircraft, firing ranges overhauled and new training facilities set up for defence personnel and U.S. marines.
“Working with the United States, our allies and Indo-Pacific neighbours, we will continue to advance Australia’s interests by investing in the Australian Defence Force,” – Prime Minister Scott Morrison

Falun Gong, Epoch Times and anti-China campaignApril 30, 2021 at 4:41 pm #217467james19ParticipantIn reply to the Women’s Vigil in Clapham and the demonstrations in Bristol. I pointed out that the Government were actually encouraging speaking out against China (Uighur internment camps, while itself using internment camps for asylum seekers, who have committed no criminal offences!) and support for the people of Hong Kong demonstrating against Chinese rule and the use of police violence against demonstrators. You couldn’t make it up….oh wait.
The UK Government plans to welcome 300,000 people from Hong Kong, as having ‘political’ refugee status, to claim British citizenship. To live here in freedom loving Britain!May 1, 2021 at 5:18 am #217495AnonymousInactiveIt is ironic to read some posts from left-wingers supporting a war between China and the USA like it is a progressive war that will benefit mankind and that China represents the progressive side against the so-called Empire. A war between China and the USA will not benefit mankind but will benefit the capitalist class or any of both sides. They have not learned their historical lessons yet, they continue repeating the same mistakes including the so-called patriotic war of the Soviet Union that only benefited the capitalist class of Russia and the USA, and millions of workers killed each other defending the capitalist market and their territories
May 3, 2021 at 8:17 am #217560alanjjohnstoneKeymasterChina is challenging the world order, acting “more repressively” at home and “more aggressively” overseas as it tests its growing influence, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said. “That is a fact,” Blinken said.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/3/us-top-diplomat-china-acting-more-repressively-aggressively
China is “the one country in the world that has the military, economic, diplomatic capacity to undermine or challenge the rules-based order that we care so much about and are determined to defend. Our purpose is not to contain China, to hold it back, to keep it down; it is to uphold this rules-based order that China is posing a challenge to.”
Uh-huh…the USA just want a level playing field and play the game and nothing to do with economic or political domination of spheres of influence. Who is he fooling?
We’ve been here before …power struggles between super-states
May 31, 2021 at 2:19 am #218749alanjjohnstoneKeymasterIf it was China then it would be seen as a serious security threat.
The Philippines is set to convert its underdeveloped Thitu Island into a major military logistics hub in the South China Sea, a plan that could give the United States a new beachhead.
