It is “Australia’s Cuban missile crisis” and warns a Chinese naval base in the Solomons would be “the effective end of our sovereignty and democracy”
“China will have parked an enormous stationary aircraft carrier within direct striking distance of every eastern Australian city”
Solomon Islands prime minister Manasseh Sogavare has dismissed foreign criticism of the country’s security negotiations with China

March 31, 2022 at 5:15 am #228426alanjjohnstoneKeymasterChina should not become “too closely aligned” with Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, Sir Jeremy Fleming, the head of UK cyber-intelligence GCHQ has warned.
He said China’s long-term interests are not served by an alliance with Moscow. China’s aspirations to become a leading player on the global stage were “not well served by close alliance with a regime that wilfully and illegally ignores” international rules.

US deputy secretary of state,Wendy Sherman, while speaking at a House of Representatives foreign affairs committee hearing on Wednesday, said the “range of sanctions” and export controls coordinated among US allies and partners against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the country’s economy, and oligarchs, should serve as an example for China’s leader Xi Jinping.

How different it is for the small island nation of the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.

April 26, 2022 at 2:49 pm #229032alanjjohnstoneKeymasterOne of the most senior US officials in the Pacific has refused to rule out military action against Solomon Islands if it were to allow China to establish a military base there, saying that the security deal between the countries presented “potential regional security implications” for the US and other allies.

The governor of the southern Japanese island of Okinawa said Friday: Japan should focus more on peaceful diplomacy with China instead of on military deterrence…
“We are strongly alarmed,” Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki said of discussions in parliament about the possibility of a security emergency involving Taiwan, and concerns that Okinawa, 600 kilometers (370 miles) away, could become embroiled in it.
“Any escalation of problems over the Taiwan Strait and the contingency of Okinawa being a target of attack must never happen or be allowed to happen,” Tamaki said
