April 26, 2022 at 2:38 pm #229031Thomas_MoreParticipantRainforest Rescue:
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro wants to open 1.17 million square kilometers of indigenous territories in the Brazilian Amazon – an area nearly five times the size of the UK or three times the size of California – for mining and hydropower projects.
20,000 illegal prospectors have already invaded the indigenous Yanomami lands, while 442 gold mines can be found on Munduruku lands. The miners destroy ecosystems and pollute rivers with mercury, and bring with them a host of other ills – alcohol, drugs, prostitution, crime and disease.
Indigenous territories are crucial for people and the environment: With their sustainable way of life, indigenous people preserve the rainforests better than government-managed protected areas, as the United Nations has confirmed.April 26, 2022 at 3:44 pm #229040alanjjohnstoneKeymasterhttps://socialistbanner.blogspot.com/2022/04/evictions-for-masai-in-tanzania.html

April 27, 2022 at 10:29 pm #229065alanjjohnstoneKeymasterLab-grown meat or ground-up insects could lead to big savings in carbon emissions and water, as well as freeing up land for nature. Pressures on the planet could fall by more than 80% with such foods, compared with the typical European diet, while providing a more complete range of essential nutrients than a purely vegetarian or vegan diet.
May 11, 2022 at 2:56 pm #229496Thomas_MoreParticipantThe U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services killed more than 1.75 million wild animals across the country in 2021.
May 11, 2022 at 5:43 pm #229497Thomas_MoreParticipantWildlife Services kills has killed over a million wildlife a year. Many are the big predators. Others are the unfortunate animals deemed “pests.” Most of the killing is done to appease the agricultural community. The ranchers, especially, call for the death of wolves, bears, and cougars.
Many of the victims are collateral damage. They aren’t the intended victims, but they happen to wander into the traps.
May 14, 2022 at 3:33 pm #229575Thomas_MoreParticipantAnd it goes on, every day, the language which reveals human hatred for other animals and the human need to castigate and liken other animals to the human behaviour which reveals humans at their worst:
“It’s ANIMAL behaviour!” (The actions of Israeli troops).
“They’re not humans, they’re ANIMALS!” (Describing Russian actions in Ukraine).
“Only ANIMALS would do that!”
He’s an ANIMAL!”
“They treated him as if he were a DOG!” (In other words, were he a dog, that would be ok).Show me a single nonhuman animal species that perpetrates what humans perpetrate on their own kind as well as on other beings, that justifies such language.
What this language does do, however, is legitimise the holocaust that humans are inflicting on other animal species, and also on one another, by branding as “other” those we inflict injury and devastation on.

May 25, 2022 at 11:14 pm #229826alanjjohnstoneKeymasterThe building of the world’s largest bioreactors to produce cultivated meat has been announced, with the potential to supply tens of thousands of shops and restaurants. Experts said the move could be a “gamechanger”… the bioreactors would grow more than 13,000 tonnes of chicken and beef a year. It will use cells taken from cell banks or eggs, so the meat will not require the slaughter of any livestock.
