Declassified have taken a look at the self-defence angle
“Foreign Office says only one British merchant vessel was targeted by Houthis before the RAF bombed Yemen. And it was registered in the Cayman Islands.”
The British government concept of interest is very expansive.

January 25, 2024 at 12:54 pm #250169ALBKeymasterImposs1904 has just posted on his blog this relevant and good article from 1982:

Tomorrow the “International Court of Justice” will give a ruling on whether to grant an injunction calling on Israel to stop its campaign of destruction and killing of civilians in Gaza pending the Court’s decision on whether or not Israel has contravened the convention on genocide.
If they grant the injunction it wouldn’t make any difference on the ground as Israel will ignore it. If they don’t grant the injunction then they may as well change their name to the International Court of Jokers.
January 27, 2024 at 11:11 am #250206ALBKeymasterThe ruling of the ICJ seems quite clever. They have decided that Israel has a case to answer for breaching the Convention on Genocide (without prejudging whether they have). Evidently the court saw there was no point in ordering a ceasefire as they knew this would be ignored. Instead they ordered some specific measures that Israel may well ignore too but which, if they do, could affect the court’s final decision.
There is another effect too. The ruling over-rides part of the tendentious definition of anti-semitism (drawn up by supporters of Israel) by reducing its scope and so extending free speech. Unless the court itself is guilty of anti-semitism, “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” is now no longer necessarily
legally anti-semitic.January 28, 2024 at 10:30 pm #250236Bijou DrainsParticipantLabour MP suspended for making link to genocide in Gaza.
Am I the only one that thinks the whole genocide debate is a little ridiculous. Is the slaughter of millions of people in the trenches of World War One somehow less dreadful than the dreadful slaughter in the Nazi death camps. Is it ok to kill and maim as long as there is no racial motivation?
I’m not sure that the citizens of Coventry and Dresden will be thinking, “my family and friends were incinerated by weapons of war, but at least I have the comfort that they weren’t part of a genocide”.
Is domicide somehow better than genocide?

February 10, 2024 at 2:54 pm #250424ALBKeymasterMeta (Facebook) is considering banning a thread like this:
Either they are ignorant about the history of Zionism which shows that many Jews were opposed to it and still are or they have been got at by the Zionist lobby.
Whatever the reason it’s a threat to free speech, if only by intimidating people into not expressing their real opinion of the Israeli government for fear of being called “anti-Semitic”.

February 11, 2024 at 8:40 am #250426ALBKeymasterA bit of good news here on the freedom to criticise Zionism issue:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-68211872.amp
This should undermine the bullying tactics of organisations like the Community Security Trust and Board of Deputies aimed at suppressing the freedom to criticise the Zionist project and its outcome, Israel, and to get people sacked (and politicians brought down) for doing so.
The International Court of Justice has already, by ruling that there is a plausible case for saying that Israel might be contravening the Convention on Genocide in its war in Gaza, in effect struck out part of the tendentious definition of anti-Semitism drawn up by pro-Israel elements that it is anti-Semitic to accuse Israel of acting like Nazi Germany.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_definition_of_antisemitism
If this continues, eventually the definition of anti-Semitism could become what everybody knows it means when they see it, such as calling Jews “Yids”, saying they control the world, that Hitler was right, painting swastikas on synagogues, etc. And that it is not anti-Semitic to criticise Israel or Zionism.

Not to be confused with another David Miller, from Oxford, who is famous for his writing on ‘market socialism’ and ‘liberal nationalism’. I just had to do a double-take!
February 15, 2024 at 6:31 am #250460AnonymousInactiveMany leftists groups do not understand that the interests of the capitalist class are more important than the interest of the working class. Capitalism is an economical society created for the capitalists, and their main purposes in every war is to natural resources, territory, sphere of influences and routes. Probably at the present time the situation in the Middle East is more important for the US than the crisis in Ukraine. Ronald Reagan was blocked by the congress to get funding for the war in the Central America but they found way to finance that war but indirectly they were fighting against the Soviet Union who also had influences in that region

February 18, 2024 at 2:36 pm #250483ALBKeymasterThat sounds more like it — even if 3500 workers doesn’t seem much and that the union is affiliated to the Communust Party of India (Marxist} (ie Leninist).

February 21, 2024 at 12:53 pm #250530ALBKeymasterWhat? The photo of a group of women members of the Israeli killing machine taking a selfie of themselves against the background of a ruined building?
