I recently read Brian Clegg's account of how the LIGO succesfully observed a gravitational wave in confirmation of Einstein's theories.
The book give's an account of how the LIGO team cast a vote on how to announce their discovery
(According to this article even where to publish it was decided democratically)

See, proletarians working in science are alreayd organising democratically (even to decide how to describe what they have achieved, I believe, from memory, they had to decide whether they had directly observed a gravitational wave).
I thought I'd mention this to keep Lbird happy.
