I quite frequently look at the Russia Today state-sponsored TV programme. It is quite curious that it seems to align itself with what might be called anti establishment tendencies in the West.
For instance, it seems to have cautiously welcomed the victory of Trump over Clinton. It also seems to quite often solicit the views of free market fundamentalists like the Libertarian Party in America. And on the Brexit issue I couldn't help noticing a tendency to support the Leavers rather than the Remainers. On that score I noted a certain preoccupation with the immigration issue and highlighting incidents of sex attacks committed by immigrants etc etc. As we know, this all fed into the racist and xenophobic narrative that at least in part resulted in the Brexit victory (not saying that everyone who voted for Brexit is a racist – that would be absurd – but it is unquestionably true that some, maybe many, Brexiteers were motivated by racist thinking)
What is going on here? Is there some kind of hidden (or maybe not so hidden) agenda at work here and what could this be? In some ways RT comes across as positively liberal by comparison with the mainstream media yet paradoxically it is in the business of promoting Putin's authoritarian capitalist world view and the regime's militaristric jockeying for power and influence vis a vis its western rivals
Any thoughts?
