    YMS< You are obviously well versed in Marx's economics, do you know if Marx ever claimed communism would be money-free?   He certainly called for the abolition of the wages system but there is a difference between a wage-free and a money-free society.Is it conceivable that money could exist without a wages system

    Well yes that is conceivable, and it actually did happen. The wages system, capitalism, is say 300 – 400 years old tops. Money has existed for thousands of years..

    Vin,certainly the line in the one from C. II (post #7): "In the case of socialised production the money-capital is eliminated." indicates there will be no money capital.  In the same paragraph he says, on Labour Vouchers: "These vouchers are not money. They do not circulate."  So, there is definitely no money capital,and labour vouchers are clearly distinguished from money.  He only posits labour vouchers as a possibility, but I think overall its pretty clear that he thought there would be no money in socialism.

    If Marx made it so…err…clear what he meant by socialism/communism, then why is it we have so much disagreement as to what socialism/communism means?

     Did you really believe I was unaware of that? No, my point is in reply to YMS. I think the suggestion was that Marx didn't explicitly say that communism would be money-free, and my point being that Marx explicity stated there would be no wages system. How could money continue in communism when the wages system is abolished? I was seeking an example. Hence the devil's advocate thingimyjig

    YMS, then I am not sure what point you are making. I am aware that 'labour time voucher' is not money. So, therefore Marx explicitly argued that communism would be moneyless. This is denied by many claiming to be 'marxist' Owen Jones for example.Would 'labour-time vouchers be such a bad thing  Or 'credits' as Gene Roddenberry called them  Cant find a reference to these on Youtube but here there is no money in 24th Century.     I wasn't making a point, you asked where Marx said there wopuld be no money, and I pointed to two sentences in the quotes I'd posted which said just that.  The problem is, as with one of the other quotes  showed, it could overall be interpreted as suggesting there would be some money (he talks of the community buying back produce).There are criticisms to be had to labour time vouchers, I'm not entirely against them, and think we should be prepared to accept some sort of labour certificate, even it is just (as in the Spanish revolution) that you can use it like a club membership card, rather than a time voucher to be exchanged for goods.  I think the objections are practical ratherthan principled.Anyway, the clearer line is there would be no money-capital, you can ram that line down their throat, and ask if there' no money capital, how can there be money for consumer goods?
