Is Owen Jones taking up where Russell Brand left off?

I wonder why that is? There must be some kind of structural continuity in thinking that eases the switch in allegiance. Perhaps Trotskyist vanguardism is basically just the ideology of the managers – echoes of James Burnham's "managerial society" here – and the gravitational pull of the Right on aging Trots is just a logical development of all this. After all, Trotsky himself headed up the militarisation of labour programme in Russia in the early 1920s which crushed independent working class resistance to the newly emerging state capitalist regime. Colonel Blimp would have heartily approved

Brand "tricked"? Come off it. Whatever else can be said about him he's not some hapless dupe of the likes of Owen Jones. He knew precisely what he was doing and saying as this video released just before the General Election shows.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwGBTcIHN0U&feature=youtu.be
Quote:What I heard Ed Miliband say is that if we speak, he will listen. So on that basis, I think we’ve got no choice but to take decisive action to end the danger of the Conservative party.David Cameron might think I’m a joke but I don’t think there’s anything funny about what the Conservative party have been doing to this country and we have to stop them.[emphasis added]Brand said Miliband 'understood that people were pissed off' and welcomed pressure from below demanding changes to society. But there were some 'qualifications to his endorsement regarding Scotland and the Green party'.
Quote:If you’re Scottish, you don’t need an English person telling you what to do,” he said. “You know what you’re going to be doing. If you’re in Brighton I think it’d be a travesty if we lost the voice of Caroline Lucas in Westminster. But anywhere else you’ve got to vote Labour, you’ve got to get the Conservative party out of government in this country so that we can begin community-led activism, so that we can be heard continually on housing, on poverty, inequality, on working.[emphasis added]And despite all this there are still those with an obvious soft spot for this clueless charlatan and opponent of socialism. It makes me want to retch !
September 10, 2015 at 10:30 am #114079AnonymousInactiveThere are members in this party voted labour before joining. One member was voting Tory.Have you read 'the clowns' book? because I could cherry pick a very accurate analisis.Brand's analysis of society has forced him to conclude that a leaderless consious revolution is need to bring resources under community control. That makes us all clowns. Is it helpful to refer to him as a clown?Do you not wish to attract him and people who think like him to the party? How will attacking him help the working class and socialism? What is it you want to achieve?Personally I don't wish the party to be seen as bunch of hatefull tossers by the working class.Brand is not our enemy, hes was wrong to support labour but then so was I. As far as I am concerned he can apply for membership
September 10, 2015 at 3:17 pm #114075ALBKeymasterIt's a matter of public record that Brand did say these things but, as this is a thread on Owen Jones, I won't refer to Brand's video where he says he was virtually bounced by those around him into that interview and endorsement of Miliband.Anyway, it is possible to be a non-socialist without being a charlatan. Isn't it? I hope.

Isn't it? I hope.Deary me, if he's that easily influenced "by those around him" it says absolutely nothing for his intergrity. Frankly, I don't believe a word of it and I suspect you don't either. But I wonder then who influenced him to come out in support of the Greens in the first place?Look, the guy's a showman and people like him will say and do almost anything to be and stay in the limelight. And for course it's possible "to be a non-socialist without being a charlatan". But there's always the exception to every rule.
