Constantly we are told by law enforcement when people are sent to prison; they should be punished for the crimes they committed. However there have been studies proving when people are punished in prison, this method fails and could make them harden criminals. This method can also increase more crimes in society.
Some countries currently are using alternative methods proving the punishment system does not work in prisons.
If you look at the prison system in Norway, the method they use in their prisons is rehabilitating the prisoners.

In Norway, This method has worked successfully in turning the prisoners into better people once they return to society. In the prisons, they get to learn about their personal issues and how to overcome their problems. They are also treated humanely.

Compare Norway prison system to any other western nation, Norway prison system are more effective in helping the prisoners and reducing crimes.
Prisons should be a place where people get rehabilitated and educated, not torture.
California because of prison overcrowding and the cost of incarceration passed Proposition 47, reclassifying a lot of felon charges into misdemeanour offences so releasing large numbers of prisoners.
