The defection of an apty named Tory MP, Reckless, to UKIP and his subsequent resignation to confront the electors again (probably the only honourable thing he's ever done or will do in politics) will provoke a by-election in Strood. This is a seat in Medway on the North Kent coast. Main town is Rochester.

The by-election is likely to be held in November, maybe later.

Although there is a Conference resolution barring us from standing in parliamentary by-elections (and making a fool of ourselves by getting less votes than Screaming Lord Sutch or Mr Blobby), this is something we could follow up. It will be the first election in the South East region since the Euroelection in May which we contested, so some there will know about us. It's next door to one of the constituencies (Chatham) Kent & Sussex branch have asked to contest in next year's general election.

We should be able to at least put out a press statement, write to the local press, even organise a literature stall. This would be a good way to follow-up the Euroelections and gain experience for the general election.

Hopefully, Kent & Sussex will taken up the challenge.

I have to agree with Adam. This is an oppurtunity to build on the impressive work carried out by Kent and Sussex Branch in the Euro elections and their continued presence, with literature stalls ETC. It builds up a consistency of approach and appearance, that we are not, a fly by night organisation. Continually getting our "unique message" across will pay dividends, I believe, in the minds of fellow workers, where this "consistent approach" is implemented.

I wonder if the present EC would accept a Form A from him

No doubt the Branch will be discussing this at its next meeting. In the meantime we will be making an early start in the campaign to contest the two Brighton Parliamentary constituencies in the General Election on 7th May 2015, with a public meeting in nearby Burgess Hill on Sunday, 9th November at 2pm.http://www.worldsocialism.org/spgb/event/lessons-first-world-war-burgess-hill-west-sussex
