WEARSIDE’S adopted gunners 4th Regiment Royal Artillery are set to mark their 40th year of freedom with a parade through Sunderland.
More than 250 gunners will parade in the city centre with bayonets fixed at 1pm on Saturday, August 2, to celebrate the 1974 granting of freedom to the “North East Gunners”.
A gun salute using eight 105mm guns will then be fired by a further 80 gunners from Mowbray Park’s terrace.
Council leader Paul Watson said: “The close bond between 4th Regiment and the people of Sunderland goes back many years, and I know how proud everyone in this city is of the ‘Gunners’.
“It’s always an honour to welcome the 4th Regiment to Sunderland. I hope people will cheer them on and applaud them as they mark their 40th with this parade and firing of guns.”
The regiment last exercised its freedom with a parade in June last year after returning from its third tour of duty in Afghanistan.
Commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Catto, said: “The 4th Regiment Royal Artillery has enjoyed a long relationship with Sunderland which was formally recognised by the Award of the Freedom in 1974.
“Over the ensuing 40 years, the regiment has hugely benefited from this close bond. Sunderland and the North East has proven to be a strong source of recruitment for the regiment, and through these young men and women, an identifiably North Eastern character has formed in the regiment.”

You think I'm a piece of dog shiite, do you? get on a public platform and support your dross! A "piece of 'dog shIite", will prove what a numpty you are, really, really!!
By the way, I am aware! of the way the "state" uses ordinary workers, to do their dirty work, so that their control over society and the other materials of society, can be continued!!!
What are you aware of? The lies told to you by the media and the rest of the "propaganda machine", that protects their wealth?July 24, 2014 at 2:10 pm #103995SocialistPunkParticipantSteve, ya forgot to provide a link for the article. Someone who served in Northern Ireland should be familiar with this. I'd say that is more degrading than harsh words. As for 'free speech is what our (sorry) my armed forces are there to protect.' That was not the case either with the Public Order Act (Northern Ireland) 1951.Whether these facts will convince any readers there I don't know.Would you be interested in posting on libcom.org/forums/? You might find more common ground.

Everyone must go to show their appreciation to our brave armed forces. Heroes every one of them, guardians of our peace, God bless them.

"guardians of our peace", what peace pallionlad1978? People in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya are no threat to the UK, so what are "we" being guarded from? as opposed to the interests of the UK's wealthy, who have monetary interests all over the place!
You say "heroes", I say they shouldn't have been in these places and others, in the first place.
Finally, how dare you say, "Everyone must go to show their appreciation to our brave armed forces", they are not "my" armed forces and I, in no way, intend to show appreciation for anyone killing people for interests that are not mine, nor ever could be.
So speak for yourself mate and give others the same right. Or don't you believe in "free speech

What a nasty piece of dog muck this stevecolburn is. So called free speech is what our (sorry) my armed forces are there to protect.
To have someone such as this piece of muck degrading a member of my family who has served in the war zones of N. Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan (15 tours in theatre in total). As 'Bomb Squad' in N. Ireland and as ATO (so called IED expert) in other theatres is a personal insult.
To the families of soldiers from this city, who have paid the ultimate price for the likes of stevecolburn, I and many others apologise on his behalf for these disgraceful comments and sincerely hope he is unaware of what his mouth spouts out.
Crawl back under your stone with the other disgusting pacifists who think the same as you.
